    CVA Revolver

I've been wanting a revolver, and have read alot here about them. I've pretty much decided to stay away from the brass frame, and don't really care about caliber. But, cruising the web last night, I found a CVA 1851 Navy with brass frame in .44 (yeah I know it's not the correct ccaliber) for...

    lets hunt together....flintlock that is...........

Neat pictures Bob. For those of us who haven't been around for long, tell us the story about the turtles. Pretty cute little guys for something that could take your hand off when grown. :) Dave

Just by my first BP and have ? on patch for PRB

1-1/4" square is plenty big for .54 cal. That's how I cut mine and it is maybe a little too much. Dave

    T/C New Englander.

Sounds pretty high to me. I don't know about where you are, but here in Indiana, the pawn shops don't even want a side lock, and you'd be lucky if they gave you 100 bucks for any TC sidelock in new condition. You should be able to get that gun in good condition for $150 to $200. I got my...

    blown patches

My Renegade blows out pre-cut, prelubed patches too. I went to Stumpy's Moosemilk and pillow ticking with a .005 under ball, and now I could use the patches again if I wanted to. Dave

    CVA Bobcat range day

I'm pretty happy with Stumpy's recipe for Moosemilk too. I tried it and plain old spit patches today, and really saw no appreciable difference in the groups. And if you leave the patches pretty wet, I found that I didn't have to swab at all. On the occasion that I did swab, my groups went to...

    I GOT IT !!!

Thanks Daryl, I'll experiment with some tighter patches. I know that with a .530 ball and a .018 patch, the thing is nearly impossible to load without hammering on the ball. I can't push hard enough to get it go go all the way down. As a matter of fact, I bent a nice aluminum range rod...

    I GOT IT !!!

Took the Renegade back to the range today...with every possible combination of patches, balls, lube and powder. Trying to bring a group together. Turns out that all I needed was Stumpy's Moosemilk, some .012 cotton, and GOEX ffg. As soon as I got away from the thick patches and Pyrodex...

    Card Wads.....questions

Stumpkiller, The Moosemilk I was using was not your recipe. It was some stuff somebody gave me. I just made your brand the other night. I'll give it a try this weekend. I got this Renegade used. Maybe the barrel hasn't been broken in yet. I will definately go to a thinner patch. I picked...

    Card Wads.....questions

Yes. Patches were lubed. I tried several different lubes, and can't really say which ones were burning through. With a .530 ball and .018 patch, it takes all I have (280 lbs) to get the load into the barrel. Is it possibly too tight? Dave

    Card Wads.....questions

Had a couple of hours to try out the recently aquired Renegade last weekend. Boy...do I have alot to learn. Before going out I had a chance to prep a little. I remembered Daryl posting something about using "card wads" to act as a fire block for the patch. So I cut a few out. After I was...

    Stuck ramrod - resolved

:agree:Yeah.....That'd suck. Although, with my short sightedness, I only worry about one problem at a time. Sometimes my methods cause other problems. Now that I think about it....nobody try that. I'm too new here and have too much to learn to make enemies. :o Dave

    Stuck ramrod - resolved

Glad you got it out. I got mine stuck the first night I had the Bobcat. Was cleaning out the packing goop, and put too many patches on the jag. Although I am very new to this, I learned something that night, and put a couple of things in my tool box. Most of the ramrods I've seen are...

    A Long Winded Howdy

I'm not surprised. I bought the Bobcat first, and two Thompson Centers pretty soon after. The T/C's are used, but the $53 Bobcat is by far the better shooter. I'm also quite certain that the T/C's would do better if I had a little "know how" and a lot more time to shoot. Good Luck, and have...

    Greetings From Central Indiana

I hope you guys are right about just needing to shoot more. The only "new" gun is the Bobcat. I got the Renegade used, but it doesn't look like it's had alot of use. A .530 RB patched with .018 is so tight I have to almost hammer it down, so I think that the barrel is okay. I'll just keep at...

    Greetings From Central Indiana

I got the bug to try muzzleloading several years ago, but never did anything about it. When I get into something, I jump with both feet. In the past month since I bought that $53 Bobcat from Walmart, I've owned or otherwise possesed three others. A TC White Mountain Carbine (gone already), a...

Lyman stocks - Trade or Deerstalker

I think it's gonna be the Trade Rifle for me. Thanks for all the help. Dave

Lyman stocks - Trade or Deerstalker

I think I'm going to order one of these rifles. I'd like to get the Trade Rifle, because of the longer barrel. Question is, how radical is the shoulder cutout in the stock. I found a GPR at Gander Mountain, and there is no way I could shoot that thing. The lower part of the stock would make...

Dissapointing day with new " to me" rifle

Rat, I started out with 90 grains (measured) of Pyrodex RS, down to 50, which did help some, then switched to 70 grains of 777 fffg. The burning patch thing only happened a couple of times. Can't really say how often. The patch was T/C .018 pillow ticking pre-lubed patches. Very tight...
