    long-term storage of pre-carved stock

I have recently received my Chambers York rifle kit, including the pre-carved stock. I was expecting the barrel to fit into its inlet, after a little work at the breech, and that I'd be able to store the stock with the barrel in place. Such is not the case. The entire length of the inlet will...

ges on your frizzen Frizzen Gouges

Why does a gouge need to be repaired? All of the suggestions here return a smooth surface to the frizzen, but at the cost of removed metal and shortened frizzen life. Why not just live with the gouged frizzen, and concentrate on fixing the cause of the gouging? Don

Is there any downside to using lead? Like a problem with the extra weight swinging along with the flint? Don

    English Trade Knives

I was under the impression that trade knives (in the western Great Lakes, at least) were imported, distibuted and traded without handles, leaving the handle to be made and assembled near the end of the supply chain. References here to invoices seem to refute this. Or was there variation by...

    Lead for Bullets?

Old Ford, It sounds like you've been more successful finding scrap lead than I have. The 10 or so scrap metal dealers that I've contacted in the Minneapolis/St Paul metro area claim to have none. I've begun trying to find a source for new lead (from roofing products distributors, for...

Hear yea! Hear yea! The 2008 Minnesota State Black Powder Championship shoot will be held on Aug. 16 and 17. The shoot is hosted by The Twin City Muzzleloaders Club, and will be held at the Elk River Sportsman’s Club, Elk River, MN. A map to the event range is attached. A variety of...

    mutton tallow recipe, please

What changes if the tallow IS rancid, or moldy. I have some deer tallow from last season that's in bad shape, but would still like to use it for something. Don

    Moose juice

Apache, Are you planning to hunt with a fouled bore? If not, since you're working up a hunting load, I would think you'd want to be wiping between shots so that you're shooting out of a clean bore, as you would be with your first shot in the field. Don

Stophel, I'm curious. Why do you think so? Don

    retrofitting a vent liner

Fred, With a groove cut into the plug's face, I'd be concerned about fouling buildup while shooting and difficulty getting the area clean and dry. It would feel like the same problems that would come from not getting a good seating of the breech plug onto the barrel shoulder. Don

    retrofitting a vent liner

The vent hole would have to ahead of the breech plug face by 3/16" (half of the vent liner threads major diameter) to avoid a thread interference, right? I've assumed that the vent hole should be as close to the breech plug face as possible for the best ignition, 3/16" seems like a lot, but...

    retrofitting a vent liner

Thanks, WJ. The noggin light finally went on. I'd want to use a White Lightning-type liner, though. I suppose I could install a non-recessed liner as you suggest and chamfer the outside to accomplish some of the claimed benefits of the White Lightning liner.

    retrofitting a vent liner

I suspect I don't understand exactly what you mean by notching to "clear the new liner". Do you mean filing away whatever threads in the breechplug would interfere with the liner when the liner is installed (after the plug is already in place)? I assume I would also need to extend this filing...

    retrofitting a vent liner

That's too bad. I REALLY don't want to mess with the nice flat face of my breech plug. Don

    retrofitting a vent liner

How do I deal with touch hole positioning when retrofitting a liner into a barrel? Assuming the original touch hole is ~1/32” in front of the face of the breech plug, as I believe it should be, if I locate the new liner concentric with the location of the original touch hole, the liner threads...

    Locating barrel/breech plug in stock?

Fred, I’m hoping to avoid any machining to the breech plug face, to avoid reported cleaning problems and because I don’t trust my abilities enough to start hacking at the plug. Could you accomplish the same thing by shortening the breech end of the barrel and then refitting the breech plug...

    Locating barrel/breech plug in stock?

So, if I'm buying a pre-inlet stock, I need to know if it's laid out for a touch hole liner or not, right? I ask because I’m awaiting a Chamber’s York kit to begin my first build. Their photo of the York rifle shows a vent liner, but an email from them mentions the possibility of a groove...

    starting ball without short starter

But you'd certainly have to trim the bow off at the muzzle, no? So you would still need some way to seat the ball below the muzzle and would still need a patch knife. Don

    starting ball without short starter

Stophel, How to start balls pre-wrapped-and-tied-with-a-bow is really where I was headed when I asked about ways to start balls without short starters. I wasn't trying to re-ignite this perennial argument, although I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it went that way. Whether or not they...
