How much metal polishing before browning

Starting with 180 grit up to 1000 grit and than polishing with a dremel and polish for the dishwasher. But that was the frist and only time up to now. I think I should have polished the barrel more. On the barrel are spots, the combined tang breech plug is smoother. Just learning by doing.

    flint vs. percussion

Very wise words by roundball and Claude. :hatsoff:   I confirm to that wisdom. It happend to me though I still use all my other weapons. Have to, alone to keep them.

    Maximum Powder Charge

:hmm: Can't say that I shot conicals with the revolver. Seems a question what is your target. For Competition and paper targets at 25 m I can't remember to have seen in more than 20 years of competition shooting anyone using conicals. All used round balls and the highest load anybody...

    Holsters for Deringers

Hello Red-Wing, I have neither complete outfit nor I am member in a period club. I am a average skilled target shooter in a number of bp ml competions and a number of competions with modern pistol, revolver and rifle. Most important, as lomg as I hit to my abilities, it is great fun and that...

    flint vs. percussion

If money isn't the question, take a rifle which you can have as percussion and flint lock and take both. I have two flint lock so far, a pistol and a rifle which you can regard from the lower end of production weapons. The locks are good. Ignition difficulties in competiton may be after shot...

    Holsters for Deringers

Red Wing thank you very much for showing the picture. That gives me an idea for making the right sort of holster. I need two holsters for wearing two pistols of that kind on a belt on the back. :hmm: Might take some time to aquire the rigth tools and materials in...

    Maximum Powder Charge

Yep, accuracy as in target shooting for competiton needs not the max load but depending on caliber is on the lower end. That is for most revolvers somewhere between the 10 to 20 grain range of Swiss Nr.2 or Wano PPP. But accuracy I understood was not the question here, here is the question what...

    Philadelphia Derringer redone

I would like to try at ten feet first but you should avoid to be caught by the range officer. The ranges where I can shoot with that pistol, only shooting at 25 m is permitted. Welcome to German regulations. Some are :youcrazy: To be honest, I did the stock twice. Made an error and ruined...

    Maximum Powder Charge

:hatsoff: Yes you get that right. For a revolever I have not seen it, only for my .45 rifle which once got e new breech plug. I would not fire such load off hand neither do they when proof shooting. They have a machine that pulls the trigger and and the engineer takes cover just in case...

    Maximum Powder Charge

On page 27 http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/bundesrecht/beschussv/gesamt.pdf of that document you find the table for working pressure, working load and prof load according to caliber. By the way, 1400 bar is working pressure, not proof pressure. Very short barreld psitol like the Derringer...

Lyman 45 Cal BP revolver questions

It might be possible that you need .454 balls. You may consider to remove the cylinder for loading and do that with a special loading press. Example as they look for .44 Colts & Remingtons...

    flint vs. percussion

If you are infected by the bp virus deeply  , go for the flint. Though I started with percussion and needed twenty years to try a flint, the flint is the real thing. Only make sure, you have a good lock to avoid the labour of bringing it to shoot though if you have the will to hold...

    Holsters for Deringers

:hatsoff: I have no experience in making holsters. Do you have a recommendation for a book with a good description of how to do it?

    Holsters for Deringers

:hatsoff: Thank you very very much for sharing your vast experience with muzzle loaders. Well that makes sense because I could not find trustworthy material to holsters for Deringers from Deringer. The only holsters I saw where indeed for the two barreld cartridge Derringers. In this case...

    Maximum Powder Charge

We have in Germany the requirement of proof shooting every firearm, including muzzle loaders. For a .44 caliber with rifled barrel, the proof load is: 146.6 grain (9,5 gramm) black powder and 293.2 grain (19 gramm) lead conical at 1400 bar chamber pressure. In case of a revolver where the...

    Holsters for Deringers

As I have my replica Deringer rebuild, I am intersted in finding out, what holsters where used originaly for that pistol or how they were carried. I have searched the forum and found a number of threads on holsters and manufacturers of holsters but those apllie to revolvers not to...

    Philadelphia Derringer redone

Yes, a little deadly belly pistol I think at close range. I will take it to the range and try to find out, what I can hit up to 25 m. I will take 20 grain Swiss Nr. 2 with a .440 RB and first a .01 patch. Even with the little barrel that is enough to send the bullet strait through 25 mm single...
