Hawken rifles at Cody Firearms Museum, Cody, WY

Hi Ron, and thanks! No flooding issues where I live (Old Town), but we haven't been able to raft for more than a week now. Looks like this weekend we'll be able to get out there again safely.

Hawken rifles at Cody Firearms Museum, Cody, WY

I'd like to hear more about the parking lot at the Cody Firearms Museum, as well. From what I hear, parking lots are the best way to ascertain the quality of the museum one is about to enter. To wit, there was also poop in the parking lot of the National Firearms Museum when I visited. And as...

    Diminishing Returns?

Agreed. As the OP, I feel like I got my answer and more! Thanks all!

    Diminishing Returns?

That's fantastic stuff! I wish I'd thought of it. Thanks!

    Diminishing Returns?

Well, I was interested in knowing exactly what was meant by the phrase and I think I've got it. Thanks all!

Considering reboring Pedersoli RMH to .58

I've been quietly reading the advice and opinions since posting the question, and I want to thank you all. I'm definitely going to do this, and I'll let you know how it turns out. Also...bonus! I'm so happy to hear there's a Mountain Man club in my neck of the woods! Thanks White Fox for the...

Considering reboring Pedersoli RMH to .58

It's a .50 right now, and the bore is perfect. But I already have another .50 BP rifle, and I'd love to hunt elk with a .58 PRB. Bob Hoyt (famous on these forums as a barrel-smith) asked me to send it to him to look it over and see if it's possible. His rate is very reasonable, and I'm sure...

    Diminishing Returns?

I've heard the term "Point of Dimisnishing Returns" before from long-time blackpowder shooters, and it's mentioned in the Lyman handbook, but always as assumed knowledge. As in, "of course, the Law of Diminishing Returns says..." But I have never seen it defined completely. A quick search on...

Pedersoli RMH "browned" barrel has light rust on the outside

Plain ol' gun oil will remove the rust? I know it will prevent it. I bought it rusty (I swear!) and have been keeping it oiled since.

Pedersoli RMH "browned" barrel has light rust on the outside

It's actually very light rust (but it's not the browning itself). I want to remove it without damaging the brown patina from the factory. Any recommended products and/or techniques? Thanks.

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

The PA Conical looks great. I'll order a box. Thanks!

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

Thank you. Plus, I was wrong about the bullet weight "regulation" anyway. I've lived in quite a few states while in the military. when I got out and could finally choose, Colorado won easily. Love this place.

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

Sounds like you're talking about California! You know, we recalled almost all of the politicians who passed those bills, and the laws themselves probably won't last too much longer--especially the mag size one. Anyway, we have enough ranchers, farmers and military here to hold our own against...

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

Looks like you're right about that! 177gr for a .490 ball. Hmm, it's funny when you think you know something for sure and then suddenly you don't. Thanks for that! Still, I'll want a little more lead for elk, to give me a few more options in the field.

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

Fantastic info. Thank you all. I was thinking I'd have to buy another barrel (or another rifle?) in order to shoot PRB and conicals so I'm not always messing with the sights, but I love the idea several of you mentioned about finding a heavy hunting load and then matching the target load to it...

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

The sights on my .50cal ML are set for a PRB over a target load at 100yds. But if I want to hunt elk with this rifle, I need to start considering bullets. So, in general (with an understanding that there are a thousand ballistic variables involved), will I need to drastically change my sights in...

    Instant addiction to BP

I appreciate the welcome from all! Thank you. I choose the name in part because of my French-Canadian heritage, but mostly because of our local river, the Cache la Poudre. Sometime around the 1820s, French trappers and voyageurs are said to have become snowed in on the bank of this river (near...

    Instant addiction to BP

Hello from Fort Collins, CO! I'm a long-time shooter, but only discovered muzzleloading fun this past summer. I visited my college roommate for the first time in about 20 years, and he took me shooting in the desert outside of LV. But no "black guns" or other modern contrivances here! Percussion...
