Looking to buy a used flintlock, how do I know if it will throw good sparks?

Please be POSITIVE that the barrel was not left loaded before you test for sparks with the lock in the rifle or smoothbore. I have purchased used Muzzloader and found a couple that had active loads in the barrels. Be careful.

Check your CCI caps before you buy

I have shot percussion rifle and shotguns since 1963. Back in the 60’s Remington caps used to lose the primer discs from the caps quite often. the newer caps are probably better. I use whatever caps are available locally . I have had no problem with any other caps, cci, or others if I do my...

    Old family horn

I think the base plug was made by sawing a pine limb of a close diameter and cutting to a length for the plug, then installing it so the end grain shows. That would give it the somewhat rough appearance it has. That would be a novel way to make the plug with a minimum of tools. A nice horn...

    Boat anchor material!

it may be that the sear is catching on the flat rear edge of the fly when the set trigger is used. It may need filing or a new fly before it damages the nose of the sear. I hope you find the problem and is an easy fix.

    Boat anchor material!

Now that I see your lock photo, it looks to me that the fly is in there backwards?

Maybe the fly is too short, or not working properly.

    Flint size

I have a rifle with a Chet Sholtz flintlock on it. Does anyone familiar with this lock know what size flint works best in this lock? I need to order some and don't want the wrong size. Thanks.

    Bullet trap/backstop

4or 5 plastic empty water softener bags stacked between the target face and the sand or other filler in a 2x2 ft. Box makes a good self healing barrier and prevents leaking for me for a year or more of weekly shooting in my experience.
