    TC .58 Hawken

My brother has bought two antique rifles, one from 1864 and one from about 1830. He sent both to Mr. Hoyt for re-boring and other work. I must say that Bob Hoyt is one of a kind. His work is outstanding and his prices are extremely reasonable. With my bro's first rifle, Bob did the work and...

    The Hawken Rifle

Your rifle is in excellent shape, almost like brand new. How did you happen to come by it?

    politeness

Bigted, I know how you feel. That's the reason I left the board for a year or so. I just re-registered again and it appears that the problem is better now than it was a year ago or so....

    Great Plains Rifle finish

Quigly, I have the same rifle and didn't care for the factory finish. I put Tru Oil on mine and it looks great now. But...........I just finished a TOTW Hawken where I used Laurel Mountain Forge stock sealer and finish, and I really like the results. In my very humble opinion, the LMF...

    Ball and patch combination

Necchi, I had always wanted something like a real Hawken. I bought a GPR and it is very nice, but, I still wanted something closer to the real thing. Having been to Track many times, I just decided to bite the bullet and get the kit. I'm glad I did. I started on the rifle just a bit last...

    Ball and patch combination

I forgot to mention that my rifle came with a Coleraine barrel. I just re-checked the measurement with a pretty good Starrett dial caliper and it measures 0.575 across the grooves. I think I will try start with a .530 ball and .015 patches and experiment from there. Thanks!

    Ball and patch combination

I just finished building a TOTW Jim Bridger's Hawken rifle and was wondering about a starting point for patch and ball combination's. The bore is .54 caliber and I have measured the grooves right at .575. I have both a .530 and .535 mold, but am thinking the larger ball might be hard to load...

    rust

I just bought some Shenandoah Valley Lube after hearing that it is the same formula as the old Lehigh Valley Lube. I hope so. The label looks exactly the same as the Lehigh Valley. I use Ballistol in my barrels and have never had a problem. Use it full strength and you should be ok.

Totally agree. If Kroil can't fix it, nothing can.

    Rust Browning GPR Barrel

My barrel browning job was a bit disappointing and was much redder than the chocolate color I had on the rest of the metal. I accidentally got some Ballistol on the outside of the barrel after swabbing the inside with it. So, I thought I would wipe the outside with it as well. Now it looks...

    Rust Browning GPR Barrel

Mike, I just finished building my first real Hawken from TOTW. Jim Bridger's Hawken. I really like the look of blued metal, so I looked into the possibility of cold bluing using some steel that I bought at a local Fleet store. One attempt convinced me that cold bluing won't work. So, my...
