    32 Crockett cleaning headaches

That is how I clean most things. Used and worn out wire brushes with an overpatch.

    Track of the Wolf

One thing I wanted to mention here, I have often dug revolutionary. Plants out of the sand down in the Savannah Georgia area. Many of the blonde flints that originated in Germany or Austria and found their way here tend to be entirely pyramidal. They have no flat on the top at all. This is...

    Track of the Wolf

I have run into this many times myself. Flints from all over and even many original ones from the 18th and 19th century. What kind of diamond file would one use?? rotary?

The M79 of the 1700s - Hand Mortar

Actually, because these pieces have a chambered breech and the grenade just sits in there, they don't fit tightly and there is practically no chamber pressure. It doesn't take much powder to throw a 3 lb grenade a long way. Hence the recoil is not unmanageable unless the chamber is overloaded...

Blairsville and Monroe here. Split my time between areas. But have ranges in both.

    Roundball size for .69 smoothbore?

I have several .69 smoothies. I use a .660 patched ball (paper cartridge) for early shots and drop in a .680 without patch as it gets a bit dirty.

.62 smoothbore as an all around gun?

I have done the same with broken arrow points and spear point pieces for 40 years. And someone nearby in the 19th century was doing the same. I dug a cache of about 4 or so salvaged flints from an old home foundation. All were broken and re-chipped flint tools

Hey Gunner, you and I are about 30 minutes apart. I live in Monroe and do most of my shooting here or in Blairsville.

    Explosive Cannonballs

excellent cut ball. That looks like a confederate 12 pounder ball. The confederate balls tend to have random sized shot in them while Yankee balls are usually full of the same size shot. Also the Confederate balls tend to be full of pine tar as a matrix for the shot. That appears to be what...

    Belgian flintlock repro

I'm just glad to hear someone besides me was out there in those years making these things work with what they could get! In the years before the Civil War centennial, it was impossible to get anything here...no caps, flints, powder or balls. So everything was some kind of "made by necessity"...

Should I consider a smoothbore if I'm a rifle guy?

I use my smooth bores more than my rifled pieces. They are more of a challenge for one thing. I tried to increase the challenge in my hunting about 1976 when Thompson Center first came out with their Hawken. Until that time I had hunted with an M-1 Garand. I assumed that a caplock .50 Hawken...

So in future I'll make sure my balls are shiny! shooting smoothbore all the time, I've been neglectful and shot a fair number of whiter ones over the years...haha

Not sure of your meaning. I personally saw the huge discolored area in that oak log section. Would the lead not have leeched into the pork if it had been shot repeatedly over a couple of years? And would it not be toxic? I have no idea. Funny story though, I had a bag of .680 round balls...

What can you use on a Powderhorn to prevent it from cracking?

If I am going to be out in long term wet weather with a horn I have in the past wiped it down with a thing coat of spar varnish from time to time. Gives it a nice patina, fills small holes and makes it waterproof. Modern spar varnish is also UV resistant.

Not too sure that there is a lot more to it. This was or had been the old farmers prime breeding pig for some years and even though it was dangerous he had preserved it every Fall. The whole community drove the pigs into the hog pens every October. Everyone knew and sort of hated the pig but...

Just a story to go with this: In the Choe Stoe valley where I have my 2nd home, the habit in the 1820s was to turn all your pigs loose to fatten and fend for themselves all summer long and most of the fall. When killing time came in late October, everyone in the valley would herd them all up...

    Rehardening my frizzen

Very dull flint for sure! That's the type I keep in an original to make sure they look good but can't be sparked by someone even if they happen to get past my observation.
