    Earlier pattern Shot snake

I've been wanting to make a shotsnake of this earlier style for some time and with an 1840s hunting event this coming weekend, I decided it was time to do it. Here is the photo that inspired my reproduction (with my repro at the bottom): and here is a close up of my repro: The...

    Tobacco Pipes

I've made mine and several for friends from the roots of a black walnut tree. I carved it with a razor blade and sealed it with bee's wax. It smokes pretty good, no aftertaste, etc. The graphic I carved into the face of the pipe is the bloody arm of the 1835 Dimmit Flag of Texas. The...

    Leather Treatment??

I use beef tallow, cod liver oil, and beeswax mixed in a 2:1:1 ratio, for shoe uppers I will add pure neetsfoot oil into the mixture (2:1:1:1)warm it up and apply it blood warm by rubbing it in by hand.

    Stitching Materials?!?

I like to use 4 or 5 strand left twist Irish linen cord, sometimes I use linen bookbinding cord for the 12+ spi. I kit it up with a mixture of beeswax, pine pitch, and pine tar to help weather proof it and to really glue the stitches together when pulled tight using the lock stitch or backstitch...

    "Underhammer" pistol

And much easier than the wooden pattern pieces I usually cut out with a band saw! Thanks for the idea.

First shot bag (1830s/40s hair on hide)

Thank you all for your kind words, it was a fun project.

First shot bag (1830s/40s hair on hide)

This is my first attempt at an 1830s/40s hair on hide shot bag. The flap is covered with black bear leg hide that I seamed down the middle, the binding is red Moroccan leather, the flap lining is a silk/cotton cloth known as 'Silveret', and the bag itself is 2.5oz veg tan leather that...

    "Underhammer" pistol

Those look great! I was just wondering if there was anything in particular that needed to be taken into consideration when creating the 'action' of the pistol. The original doesn't seem to have any internal mainspring since the ring trigger is mounted externally, did you use an internal...

    Question for bag makers

What kind of wax for my horn

I had a similar problem when I made my horn. I used a plug that I made out of mesquite and being that it was my first horn to make, all parts from scratch, I did some things the hard way, but I sealed any leaks around the base of the plug by caulking it with linen cord soaked in pitch and pine...

    Question for bag makers

I use beef tallow, codliver oil, and beeswax. Equal parts of the first two and the amount of wax would be dependent on when you are making the bag. It's a period leather treatment for all leather goods and waterproofs very well. I use it as a 'top coat' after applying several soaks of just...

    Sheffield style belt knives

Thanks! The sheet under them is part of a needle package for some artifact props for work. I reproduce artifacts for display and use for interpretive programs by the Texas Historical Commission.

    Sheffield style belt knives

Thank you for your kind words. No, I'm not familiar with Mr. Henry's work, but have looked him up...very nice knives! Metallurgy is still somewhat out of my comfort zone (I usually work with leather, wood, and cloth) but with the limited success I have had with these and my forays into 1840's...

    Sheffield style belt knives

These are my first attempt at knife making, I made them in the 'Sheffield' style based off of Gold Rush era bowies. They are made of A-2 tool steel with jigged bone handles and German silver pins and guards. They are still a little rough to be true Sheffield's, but I'm happy with how they...

    "Underhammer" pistol

All, In the next few months I will be attempting to replicate two styles of underhammer pistols with extremely simplistic firing mechanisms. These are the two styles in question: My question is if any of ya'll have built similar styles and if you ran into any snags in the layout that...

    A Colt Paterson Holster

Very Nice! Here are some of the holster's I've made for Patersons the past few months. The first one is based off of a surviving original used in one of the early ranging companies here in Texas, though it had a finial in place for a flap that had been cut off by it's original owner so I...
