This is my first attempt at an 1830s/40s hair on hide shot bag.

The flap is covered with black bear leg hide that I seamed down the middle, the binding is red Moroccan leather, the flap lining is a silk/cotton cloth known as 'Silveret', and the bag itself is 2.5oz veg tan leather that has been kitted with beef tallow, bee's wax, and cod liver oil.

The decorative markings on the inner pocket were copied off of a period bag and were done by hand with a flat piece of steel. I angled the sides of the inner pocket 1/4" out on each side so that when I stitched it to the main bag and straightened the sides up it would open the top. I then wet formed the bottom of the inner pocket to be able to accomodate some of my tools (turnscrew, a tin of tallow, etc.) The entire bag is handsewn.

The first photos were taken after I finished the bag. These next photos show it's current condition (11 months later) and the horn I made for it. I read an account of a man who shaped his horn with a piece of glass and I tried it out and came up with this one.

All the right touches, very nicely executed. It's not easy to work around all that hair and do it neatly, but you nailed it. The rest of the detail work is really tasteful and neat too.

Top notch! :hatsoff:
