    Building 1st Gun_Isaac Haines

Some guys are using brass black on steel....I don't know if it provides any rust protection or if it just antiques the metal.

To brown or not to brown.....I have also been reading about a French Gray finish. If I just do polished white, how do you keep it from rusting something terrible?

About 6 hours of filing and sanding after school yesterday. That frizzen is so hard, my files barely cut it. Still some deep pits I may not be to get rid of.

Many didn't finish the barrel either did they?

I don't like the button/spring setup that they sent. I would rather have a recessed push button to release it on the other side of the stock and have the butt plate clean.

That's no biggie. I can find some regular slotted screws. Just used what I had. I can also slope the edges more on the cover. Can I do a push button release on this or is that a no-no?

I ordered a kit from Jim Chambers. Got the stack and parts....Then I got the lock. Still waiting on the barrel. While waiting, I have been working on the brass parts and I fitted the butt plate. That small chore alone took me six hours. Next I worked on the wooden patch box cover and...

    My first powder horn build

A rusty staple certainly would have been easier. I thought the brass would go well with a little brass on a rifle. I am a bit uneducated in the period correct dept. as many of you have pointed out. Im not a reenactor....just like to make stuff.

    Gun Carving

Well, I killed about 25 deer with that gun and have witnessed similar scenes over and over again so I decided to jot it down.

    Gun Carving

I carved a buck chasing a doe on my Percussion GPR about 15 years ago. First and only gun carving I have ever done....until I build my first flintlock this summer.

    My first powder horn build

Rick, Thanks for the advice. I could not thin it down anymore because I drilled the plug hole at a slight angle and was dangerously close to coming through the side in the throat area....glad I saw the light glowing through the horn before I went any further.

    My first powder horn build

Thanks gents.....I am a Middle School Art teacher and a leather tooler/worker and I like to do things I've never done before. My first leather project was 2 years ago when my wife bought me a pair of .45 Colt Ruger Vaqueros. I made a fast draw western holster rig and it turned out nice so I...
