    neck shot

I have very limited experience with neck shots. I will say the one deer I shot in the neck suprised the living manure out of me. I shot a nice 6x6 this year out of a tree stand that I often hunt out of using one of my smoke poles. This year I was using my mauser I built while in gunsmithing school...

getting ready to lay some ribs in the next week or so. I just order a video from the gunmakers guild, "gunsmithing techniques of William Nittler", who was purdey trained. I understand that is covered quite well in the video. I'll let you know after I see it. The best thing I've foung for...

    Free hunting, so to speak?

I live in the Roosevelt national forrest...thousands upon thousands of acres of good public ground to hunt on. I grew up hunting our own small farm in western NY. I also pay a small fee every year to hunt on one of the Indian reservations. I have become friends with my guide and dont mind...

    Sharps Rifles, inline or Traditional-?

Dont tell anyone, but I built a inline on an original remington roller action, converted it to a side lever too! I still shoot my round ball sidelock, but this is a neat lil rig. Conicals and Axtel sights....should reach out and touch em for being a smoke pole. Steve

    What setup for elk?

a .50cal roundball may kill elk, but its not legal in co. Here we need to have at least 180 projectile for elk, the prb comes in at 178. In a .50 cal you need a bullet here in CO, .54 and up a prb is fine. I just built a .50 cal bullet gun for elk, I'm not sure what bullet it will like...

    .54 tapered barrel w a fast twist?

Paul, thanks for your input. Both my father and I have lots of experience killing deer at very close range and have developed the skills needed. I killed a near B&C 5x7 last year at under 15yds with a patched roundball. We both grew up in the North East and cut our teeth on whitetails with...

    .54 tapered barrel w a fast twist?

Thank you Gentlemen, My project may be taking a slightly different turn now. I am use to hunting with a patched round ball and enjoy it very much. The plan for this gun is to build a longer range gun for shooting deer on the South Dakota praire. Do any of you have experience...

    .54 tapered barrel w a fast twist?

Octagon barrel, still working rate of twist as I'm researching bullets at the moment. I'll build a long distance whitetail gun with the barrel. No more than 300$, less would be better. Thanks, Steve

    pinning a horn fore-end tip?

Thank you very much....no box wood around here that I know of so I used hardened # 6 caop head screws cut off and acraglass. It seems plenty strong. I'll post some pics as it comes along. Steve

    pinning a horn fore-end tip?

I'm puting the horn fore end on my English sporting and am planing on placeing two small pins under the 45 degree flats, pretty close to the barrel channel and using tinted acraglass to bond it to the stock. Sound about right? Anything to watch for. This first build has a few been interesting...

    modifying the lock

I'm building an Englsh sporting rifle using The Alexander Henry lock from Track. I believe this is a davis lock. I have spent a fair amount of time tuning it and its coming along nicely. Now I want to add a real Engliash touch, a bolted lock. Has anyone here ever built a safety on a percussion...

    chisel sharpening

curved chisels are called gouges. I sharpen my gouges on the inside of the radius, leaving the back side "flat". To sharpen a gouge I place it in a vise and use a round stone on the inner curve of the blade. I hope that helps some. Steve

    power belt bullets on Elk?

was it the 444 bullet that performed so poorly or one the models designed for rapid exspansion on thin skinned game? Your comments are not harsh at....I'm looking for what folks have seen in the field. The gun has a fast rate of twist, but I wouldn't let the old man hunt w a inline :nono...
