Any thoughts where I might find one? I may need to call mr. Rayl...but I was hoping to avoid a custom order. Any help much appreciated.

Octagon barrel, still working rate of twist as I'm researching bullets at the moment. I'll build a long distance whitetail gun with the barrel. No more than 300$, less would be better. Thanks,
Steve

Thank you Gentlemen,
My project may be taking a slightly different turn now. I am use to hunting with a patched round ball and enjoy it very much. The plan for this gun is to build a longer range gun for shooting deer on the South Dakota praire. Do any of you have experience with the dead center saboted bullets? They look very interesting and I am considering droping back to .50 cal and shooting these bullets as they look to be very effective at long range in addition to flat shooting. Please dont worry and think I have gone over to the darkside.....no plastic or synthetic for this guy. This one is actually for my Dad as he has a yearning to shoot a nice big Mule deer with a front stuffer. Thanks again,
Steve

In addition to not being interested in plastic stocks, or sabots, or those dark side guns, most of us consider ML hunting to be a skill sport, that requires you to actually get in range of your gun before you shoot. Its not a shooting sport, where you simply wait for something to get within range of your gun! We use a PRB and open sights because it requires us to work harder for the deer we kill( sometimes.) And " Long Range " shots at any deer are NOT in the planning.

Since you need a gun with a fast Rate of Twist to shoot those pistol bullets wrapped in plastic, you generally have to go over to the dark side. I have not been, and don't intend to go. I doubt you are going to find many recommendations from people on this forum to answer the question.

Are you sure your father has just not shared with you one of those " fantasies " that even he understands he will not ever achieve?? There are ML rifles made to shoot conicals, that can be used well past 100 yds. But they are not set up for sabots, or copper jacketed pistol bullets. And, we see a lot of mule deer killed each year with standard, Traditional ML rifles using either PRB or conicals. I understand the mule deer have now migrated East and well down on the flats, as they are now being seen and killed in Iowa. I would think your father might have success on a mule deer hunt with a traditional ML rifle, if you match the terrain with his physcial condition.

For instance, My back was out for about 12 years, and I had to stop even thinking about hunting. And, my knees have not been in very good shape to be climbing hills in Colorado since I was in College( where I injured one of them). A mule deer hunt for me would have to done on the flatter land.

Paul,
thanks for your input. Both my father and I have lots of experience killing deer at very close range and have developed the skills needed. I killed a near B&C 5x7 last year at under 15yds with a patched roundball. We both grew up in the North East and cut our teeth on whitetails with smoothbore shotguns. We get it, trust me. We also have lots of Exp on the Dakota praires where we have friends and are able to access the finest hunting that we know about. I'm not looking for an easy way out, nor am I giving up my ball gun. I am just adding another dimension to my game....and I really like building wierd guns. As for the bullets.....these aint no pistol bullets.....check em out.....much, much more like a rifle bullet. Very long and great sectional density(I know, not a term usually associated w black powder). Just one more toy is all.
