Do I need this part replaced?

In the mean time I should be able to work the butt stock and butt plates as well as the trigger guard and forearm right?

My first Lyman 54 GPR kit...

I think the first pic of the tang helps to show what I am concerned about. The left side of the tang was filed or "milled" down a little too much. I was wondering if the tang should be replaced.

My first Lyman 54 GPR kit...

Here are few pics of the buck stock and forearm. I also included a pic of the tang where some incidental milling must of taken place at the factory. I am contacting Lyman to have the tang replace. I think the walnut looks pretty good! All the pieces seem to fit alright except for the tang. The...

Do I need this part replaced?

Will do. Thanks for the responses guys. I will call Lyman today.

Do I need this part replaced?

I appreciate the quick response BrownBear. Here is another shot from the defected side. I think I will call for a replacement. Does Lyman typically need the part in hand before they send a replacement?

Do I need this part replaced?

I just received my GPR percussion kit from Lyman this week. Last night I started dry fitting some of the parts to see how things fit and if there were any problems. I noticed that the breech/tang part had some extra milling done on one side by mistake. The barrel still meets up with the edges on...

My first Lyman 54 GPR kit...

Hey guys, Well it's finally here.... my Lyman 54 GPR kit. I opted for the percussion model since this is my first ML. I received a lot of positive feedback from you guys on my last post about choosing a make and model within my budget. At the last minute I ended up calling back MidSouth...

Need help on my first choice.

Well fellas. I contacted DNR Sports and they stated their website price of $469 is incorrect. In fact the price I was quoted was $499. They explained to me that I would receive and email explaining the price change prior to my purchase. I didn't feel like arguing, but I am glad I called prior to...

Need help on my first choice.

Hey guys. I decided on the GPR. I shoulder a 51" Kentucky rifle and a hawken once more at Cabelas. I compared the lenght differences and didn't really see it as an issue. I thought the longer barrel helped me steady my aim a bit more. I am going to contact DNR sports center to make my...

Need help on my first choice.

Thanks for the info seg05. I think I am going with the GPR. This forum has been very helpful with narrowing down my decision. I will try and get some pics posted when she finally makes it in the mail.

Need help on my first choice.

I did shoulder a Cabelas Hawken when I was there. It felt much better than my neighbors CVA. I would have picked one up on clearance but they had no .54's left. If the Cabelas Hawken is close to the GPR than I probably have my answer. Never hurts to check once more to be sure though. I am a...

I will make note of that since I will probably be going with a Lyman for my first rifle. Thanks!

Need help on my first choice.

I will keep that in mind. Like I mentioned, I did shoulder my neighbors CVA Hawken quite a bit this fall and over the weekend. I have a pretty good idea on its feel now, and it closely resembles the look of the Trade rifle. I will keep your post in mind when I make it to Cabelas this weekend...

Need help on my first choice.

If I were to go with a Lyman, I don't think the breech plug is flat so probably a concave scraper? I will save my $ on the capper. I could probably put caps in an air tight container for now. I will put a nipple wrench on the list. I was thinking of picking up a plastic powder flask but wasn't...

Need help on my first choice.

Hey guys, I crossed the Dixie off the list. Being it isn't much less than the GPR and the trade rifle being the best bargain out there for that style/dimension of a rifle I figured I would narrow it down to two now. I had a chance to visit my neighbor who loaned me his .50 cal CVA Hawken over...

    Reporting from souther MN.

Thanks for the welcome Archie. Where abouts are you in MN?I live in the rural Mankato area. South of Mankato about 20 miles. Been muzzleloader hunting with my neighbor in the Rushford area a few years now. I am looking to make a decision on my first BP rifle soon. Hoping to read up on...

Need help on my first choice.

I have shot a CVA Hawken several times and hunted with one last fall. I have also shoulder a Traditions Kentuckyrifle at Cabelas. It felt very comfortable to me. The dropped stock seemed to bring the sights up to a more natural position. Not sure if the GPR is similar or not. They both look...

Need help on my first choice.

I think I will go with the GPR through DNR Sports. That is $20 less than what I was finding at Midsouth, and only $80 more than the Trade rifle. I am going to give them a call on Saturday or Monday to see if they have any in stock and how long it would take to ship. I am not a small guy by any...

Need help on my first choice.

I really appreciate the gesture Bobby. I saw the same gun at my local Cabelas. I held off on it due to the fact I want a .54 for my first one. Not looking to get into a keyboard match with anyone on cal's just my personal preference up to this point.
