    Got a new rifle

Hasn't been shot much, very fresh (Buddy bought a beautiful .54 flint at last years CLA) and he's hardly used it. I usually buy high sell low but made out on this deal for sure. [/img]

    Got a new rifle

It is a .54 cal w/ Colerain swamped barrel and English lock...I find that lock (am use to German locks) likes a tad more powder. She initially shot dead center but 4" high so I've whittled on the sights and am 2" high at 25 yards. I like plumb center at 25 yds with a full load as I can adjust...

    Got a new rifle

Have a great best friend, since we were both 9 years old, and he needed a caplock for his adult son. We traded rifles..I'd admired one of his flinters and had a great Hawken I'd had for 40 years that shoots plumb center...so we did an even swap. I never even mess with caplocks anymore. Here...

    Is Radius-Groove Rifling the culprit?

Could be that individual barrel has an issue but I do not think it is that cut of rifling. I'm guessing you mean a round bottomed rifling cut= radius groove? I've a Colerain round groove that shoots the X out from day one regardless of patch thickness. I shot .010/.015/.018 and settled on the...

    Leather Patched Ball

I would imagine in some frontier areas that skinning/dressing a hide and having left over material would make for decent patching. Lots easier than trying to acquire cloth in remote areas. Never thought about that though...interesting.

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Hey, thanks for the effort. I appreciate it. PB should arrive in a few days so I'll get busy. Thanks again.

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Thought you still had the rifle...nice job on that PB btw. Thanks

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Nice, post a picture of your release mechanism... I've a similar butt plate and want to carry it out to but not into the brass.

    Horn engraving question

BTW Had a Master Guns as my Senior Ops NCO at the JTF...great NCO except he always wanted to beat the manure out of the Air Force NCO's lol.

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Well looks like I'm going to put a simple early brass patchbox on my Colonial period .54. The rifle is sweet and not simple enough to be a barn gun so should have a period box....going wood would be too much work and make me refinish it and don't want to do that. Like this first one...

    Horn engraving question

Gus, Ya'll 1SG's worked much harder than I did as a Co. SGM. The average age in my company was 32 and avg rank SFC (E7). Rarely ever got a late night phone call over normal soldiers being soldiers (Marines being Marines) stuff....maybe 3 times in 2 years. When I was a TF CSM had lots of Marines...

    Horn engraving question

Gus, FYI, we have Company SGM's in SF and the Company CO is a Major. Each ODA is lead by a MSG and a CPT.

    Horn engraving question

Great responses all...thanks. You're right of course about the spelling as every original document I've ever seen had the writers 'spellin' as he saw fit. I suspect I'll use your ideas as a starting point and mis spell it appropriately. Good story about the exchange program...those were great...

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

True, true. As long as you practice the same moves until they are totally imprinted prob no issue. SOP's and IAD's done to perfection are the difference between professional and average troops.

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

I've a little leather open top pouch sewed on the center outside of my bag under the flap. It's right at the top. That's for patches and a lot quicker than opening a PB....I've done both and reaching to the PB is just one extra move. Your partners ain't organized. Now I could see if for...

    3rd time not the charm

Don't have enough info. What distance and what type of shooting...supported/unsupported? If I have grouping issues the first thing I do is shoot at 25 meters supported to ID any rifle not shooter issues.

    .54 barrel length

How tall are you? At my height of 5'9" a 42" barrel is about as long as I'd like. It gives a good balance both visually and weight wise.

    Horn engraving question

Would anyone know or have seen the rank Sergeant Major engraved or spelled as it would have been abbreviated in the late 1700's? Looking to put that on a horn. Thanks

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

That is a great historical piece and that style of PB..lower side hinge seems to me to be the easiest to use when holding the rifle at low port arms. I'd think carrying grease in the PB makes more sense than carrying it in your bag as that can get pretty messy on a hot day. Thanks for that link.

    Morgan's Riflemen

Nice 42 in. .54 cal swamped. The more steel you take out of that barrel the lighter the rifle.
