F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

I think nifty gizmo works. I've had a rifle w/PB but never used it for that purpose...easier/quicker/more fluid to reach in my bag. Now as a place to carry some jags/ball puller ok.

    Round ball lead and alloy?

I'll cool it down some and then try again...I am a newbie at this. I just noticed a dif between the old balls I melted and this lead bar batch as to the amount of dross.

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Oh, lol. All of the guys I know that grew up in the Canal zone call themselves 'Zonies".

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Thanks...but were they made, rifles, without a patchbox at all in that period? I've only seen smoothies and fowlers without. BTW, are you a Panama Zonie?

F&I - Colonial Period Rifle question

Gents, Need your historical expertise. Were rifles made in the F&I/Colonial period without patch box's (wood or brass)? Almost all of the 'survivors' I see other than fowlers and some smoothies have patch box's. I'm not sure if this is because higher end builds were better taken car of or that...

    Round ball lead and alloy?

Yeah, I 'll look around as it couldn't be more contaminated than this stuff was. Prior I'd melted some odd caliber balls I had laying about...now that was clean and threw perfectly round shiny balls. This 99.9% 'pure' not so nice. I noted some bluish discoloration which is, I suspect, an alloy...

    Round ball lead and alloy?

I bought 10 lbs of 99.9% pure lead from RotoM and there seemed to be a lot of cr@p in the stuff for 99.9. I'll try another source when I use this up.

    Round ball lead and alloy?

Go out into the garage, leave the door open and still use the fan. I have a Lee pro pot IV that has a bottom spout on it controlled by a lever. Nice and quick...no dipping and since the dross floats on top no casting problems. My Lee .527 mold throws great balls with no sprue at all.

    Round ball lead and alloy?

Thank you gents, appreciated and good points.

    Round ball lead and alloy?

I've just started casting round balls and see lots of lead available with minor amounts of alloy. Is that any kind of issue for a patched ball? What alloys are acceptable. Thanks Hope this is in the right section...

    waterless flintlock cleaning

Why do threads get moved around when you are talking about cleaning a flintlock frizzen/pan etc. Never seen such ah...well never mind.

    waterless flintlock cleaning

I think the WD40 is the key to the process to displace any residual water....I still have trouble not oiling a barrel after 53 years of doing so do the Barricade instead. Reg gun oil doesn't work with BP well.... The loading process was exponentially better with the WD/Barricade.

    waterless flintlock cleaning

Yeah, what isn't...I get that. Just trying something diff. This is where it stems from and lots here know about it....just another avenue is all, not some new idea I thought of. http://www.blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/wcs.html

    waterless flintlock cleaning

First shooting day after a the cleaning change. Fired a string of 12 shots without any in between wiping and it loaded easily each shot. I do not think this is because of the no water...I believe this to be finishing with WD40 after my cleaning agent and then the Barricade. It's never loaded so...

    waterless flintlock cleaning

Yeah, that's my concern....hard to break the old water habit but I'll give it a shot.

    waterless flintlock cleaning

Do you always use that technique or is that for the field only? I'm trying to go waterless period.

    waterless flintlock cleaning

Well I'm trying that waterless cleaning 'system' but using Hoppes BP solvent instead of moosemilk. Then liberal WD40 and let it set a bit...then a dry one and a Barricade patch. I'll give it a day or two and see if I get anything out rust wise. I did use a breech scraper and that's really my...

Revolutionary War Semi correct Long Rifle

That's a good idea, check out different makers and get a feel for what you really 'want'. If it takes a bit of time you'll be rewarded for your patience in the enjoyment of a piece you'll be proud to own. There are some nice custom used pieces in the 1200 buck range so just put some dough away...

Revolutionary War Semi correct Long Rifle

No, the guy asked about a semi period correct gun....so we answered. I do not belong to a group and shoot what I like...I paid a bit more but got a really nice used rifle that pleases 'me'. The historically correct part for me is not some aspect of pleasing some group but of shooting something...

    First custom flintlock

Nice rifle....looks like one made by the local gun smith and a good shooter. I like the look. His prices, btw, are a good deal for something unique.
