    Ball weight.

Hi Dutch, thanks for the response. Working on your system and getting things i need. Going to through the process this is just one of the things i need to change so i will probably melt the ones that are out of spec and use the lead for casting. I'm in the process of researching what i need to...

    .018 VS .015 thick patch

Billnpatty, i'm also doing that system. I got the papers last week and read it. I did not understand why you had to wash the material before using it, do you?

    Ball weight.

That is what i did, I sorted them out so they are within 1 grain and will try the 181.1-182.1, that is the weight where most of the the balls weighed in. may try the others at some time to see how they do but i think the solution will be to cast my own. Who knows what the next box may be like.

    Ball weight.

    Ball weight.

Necchi, yes i agree with you, i will most likely start to cast myself also in the near future. This type of weight discrepancy is really too wide to be consistent. Maven, thank you for the info and i will check out that link.

    Ball weight.

I was reading Dutch Schultz writings on accuracy and he talked about the discrepancies in weight of the balls you buy commercially. So since i am working on that system i decide to weigh the one i have. I have a 50cal so i bought one box of .495 and one of .490. I weighed the box of .490 and...

    Target setup.

How do you guys setup your target when you begin to workup a load for a flintlock? What size bull do you use and at what distance do you begin?

    Powder selection.

Thanks everyone, i think i will just keep using 3f since that is what i have and work up a load with it and see how it does.

    Powder selection.

I have a Lyman GPR in 50cal. I have been using 3f for the main charge and 4f for the pan. What are the advantages/disadvantages of using 3f for a 50cal instead of 2f? The reason i'm using 3f is because soon i will have a 40cal and thought i could use 3f for both but if there are some advantages...

    Sighting a Lyman GPR

I took a punch and hit the bottom of the (fixed)sight in several places, this caused the sight bottom to enlarge enough to cause a good fit. Thanks for the tip, off to the range tomorrow to test it.

    Sighting a Lyman GPR

Ughhh, you were right. I just tried replacing the rear fixed sight that comes with the rifle and it's too small, slips right in and also out. Man, what a pain. I was going to go shooting tomorrow now i have to find a sight. Any recommendations for a rear fixed sight for this rifle?

    Sighting a Lyman GPR

Thanks Zonie, i have never attended a shoot like that but i think it would be fun. Switching to a fixed back sight is what i will do. Yes the Lyman manual states they made the front sight taller for that reason, so it can be filed down. I have never done it before but it looks interesting...
