    solitary deer hunting

I'm hunting deer in southwestern MN without a party. So far I've been getting skunked. Do any of you folks have any ideas for the solitary hunter? Thanks.

Cap And Ball Revolvers For Personal Protection?

I absolutely agree. So many people I know try to spend their way to accuracy. Folks were debating caliber selection on another board and the question was raised, "Would you want to be backed up by the guy who spent $100 practicing with 9mm or $100 practicing with .357 SIG? The point was well...

Cap And Ball Revolvers For Personal Protection?

cap'n ball weapons have their disadvantages, but a couple comments on this thread made me think: Black powder is a lifestyle or some of us. If you shoot on a daily basis with your antiquated weapon, you may actually be less effective with a Glock. If black powder is all you have, the...

    How tight should patches be?

I have not done a scientific test comparing different patch thicknesses, but I was hoping someone could provide me with a rule of thumb. When I was a kid, I got good accuracy out of my TC New Englander using T-shirt material as a patch. Last fall when I got back into muzzleloading, I bought...

    Traditions Hawken Uncomfortable

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I've gone shooting several times since my original post and I've not experienced any pain or bruising. Shooting off the upper arm seems to be just as stable as snugging the rifle to the shoulder. Group sizes from 100 yards tends to be 4 inches and smaller...

    Traditions Hawken Uncomfortable

OK, I will try this when I go to the range tomorrow. I hope it works with a heavy jacket. Thanks everyone.

    Traditions Hawken Uncomfortable

Thanks, I will try this. Why were rifles made in this way in the first place? It seems that a gracefull "C" butt plate is a lot of craftsmanship to make a less functional rifle.

    Traditions Hawken Uncomfortable

I've got a Traditions Hawken that a really like, but the bottom of the butt plate is kinda sharp and digs into my shoulder when I fire it. I think it was designed for a smaller shoulder. What is the best remedy, a but pad? Thanks, everyone.

    T/C Warranty Questions

Update: I got a post card from TC stating that they had recieved my barrel. Is this a good sign that they will be replacing the barrel? Thanks

    Blanket Guns

The rifle is a Mirouku. If the barrel is OK, do you have any suggestions as to the easiest way to put a decent stock on it? I'd hate to chop a good barrel. What should I do about it throwing debris in my face when I shoot it? Is that a worn out nipple problem? Thanks

    Blanket Guns

Does anyone have a blanket gun made from a rifle? Would this be something to play with at a rendezvous? I've got this cheap Japanese-made kentucky rifle someone gave me. I would use it as a plinker, but it throws debris in my face from the cap. The wood is OK, but the fit and finish leaves a...

    Barking Squirrels

I'll take my .50 out and try it. I'd like to use a smokepole for small game, but I'm just not interested in buying a .32 cal. Going for headshots is probably the best method, though. Thanks everybody.

    Barking Squirrels

I have heard that if you want to shoot squirrels with a large caliber rifle, you can aim to miss them by a half inch and the shock will stun them and knock them out of the tree. This is called "barking" squirrels. This sounds weird, but does it work? Has anyone tried it?

    T/C Warranty Questions

That makes me feel pretty good. Now I feel really guilty for purchasing a Traditions Hawken as a stopgap piece. (until I could afford another T/C) Switching from a good company makes me feel like I'm cheating on a faithful wife.

    T/C Warranty Questions

I have a T/C New Englander .50 that I've owned and shot for over 12 years. The barrel has hardly any rifling left, the wear due to over cleaning, or simply having so many rounds through it. I have been reading on different forums that T/C's warranty is really great, so I boxed up the barrel...

Jhabs from Redwood Falls, Southwestern MN

Hey Smoked, I've got friends in Winona, and a bit of history there as well, I got my bachelor's and masters from St. Mary's. I've been to the rendezvous there as well several times. Does Bub's Brewery still make the best bar food around? I sure miss that place. Later, Jhabs
