    Rendezvous safety questions.

Just for the record, is the "no blowing down the barrel" rule in place so nobody eats a ball in a moment of extreme carelessness, or is there another reason? The club I shoot with has that rule also, but I havent heard why. I assume it is so we dont make extra holes in our heads, but is there...

Clean out screw on Lyman GPR breech?

I have a .54 GPR and have never removed the clean out screw, should I be doing that when I clean it? Do you get a lot of junk out thru it? I usually take the nipple out and flush water thru it pretty hard. Jeff

    Flint and steel fire

Thanks for all the info guys, I plan on doing some practicing again tomorrow out at the barn. The real trick would be to start a real camp fire, as one guy said, not just make a flame. I might try that too if I have time. (first I gotta make a flame tho... :curse:) Jeff

    Flint and steel fire

Hi all, Im having a hard time blowing a glowing charcloth into a flame. Im using a shreaded hemp rope as a nest. Just cant get it to flame. Any hints? or is hemp a bad tinder? It may have been very slightly wet from my sweaty hands but it sure lights easy if I put a lighter to it. My charcloth...

My NMLRA membership renewal just arrived

Colorado has its own muzzloading association which I will join soon as my club is a Charter. The nmlra seems more like an Indiana State association than "national" to me. If I lived near there I might join for the range. I dont personaly like inlines, but if used with real black they dont bother...

    basic revolver question

Crockett, I agree that the method on that SASS page is tedious and overkill. The Ruger has deeper cylinders, and is a pain to load light (as many SASS shooters prefer) because of the short rammer. Most people will agree that the Ruger is more dependable and accurate off the shelf. I tried to...

    basic revolver question

The pistol in True Grit was a Walker, but if the Duke wants to call it a Dragoon, thats fine with me. (first rule... The duke can do no wrong...) :: Cap and ball revolvers are fun, and you can get one pretty cheap. I recommend it. I personally like the Colts, and not the Remington so much, but...

    1851 Navy revolver

I have also heard the belt buckle aiming story. Who knows? Sounds good as any. If thats the case, glad they dont shoot low.... :curse: :: Jeff

    1851 Navy revolver

I read that one of Wild Bill's 51 navys at the Cody Museum has a dove tail front sight on it. Also, as has already been said, you can cut down the hammer notch to lower the point of aim. The story goes, that the Colts were supposed to be point of aim at 100yards. Good luck, Jeff

hotshot , redhot and spitfire nipples?

http://www.trackofthewolf.com/categories/tableList.aspx?catId=14&subId=171&styleId=785&PageSize=25&Page=2 Hopefully that link above will work. From Track of the Wolf, (the site above) I ordered the "RLP-S" stainless nipple for my Lyman Great Plains rifle. It has worked well for me. The...

    True Confessions

Under my loading table in the basement, runs a relief crack in the slab. It had a bunch of powder in it, spilled from about a year of loading black powder cartridges. (Yow see where this is going, no? ) Yup, knowing that vacuuming powder is a no no, I decided to touch it off with a...

    setting sights on rifle?

I have a Great Plains Rifle, .54 percussion, but this question is kind of generic, hope this is the place for it. I have a fixed rear sight, and need to pick a range to shoot point of aim. I mainly target shoot, up to 200 yrds, but typically 100yds or less. 25 to 100 would be common. Im...

    Lepage Target Pistol

Good looking pistol, I bet it's fun. Looks like you found your answer too. Ive been kicking around the idea of a Lyman Great Plains Pistol. I havent shot a muzzle loading pistol but they look fun to me. Jeff

    Loading The Matchlock

I dont claim to know anything about matchlocks, but it seems like loading one with a burning "match" could be pretty dangerous. true? Specially if you have to hit it with a mallet. Did people have lots of unnaturally short fingers back then? Just curious, thanks, Jeff

    Cylinder jams with busted cap?

Zonie, it's fun to think about, but it will be a cold day in He77 when I win "over-all" at a local match, even COLDER as a "Frontiersman". (cap and ball pistols) :: I know where mine shoot, and I know how to make them go off most of the time, but I'm not sure Superman could win "over-all" at a...

    FFFFF priming powder?

Maxiball, I have 3 vaqueros, (had 4, but sold one to a pard) and I love them too! I do quite a bit of Cowboy Action Shooting, and they are my favorite pistols. .45lc's, 250gr rnfp, and 34gr 2f or 3f holy black. Also run black thru my 66' yellowboy, and my shotguns. You can make a LOT of smoke...

    Cylinder jams with busted cap?

It was recommended to me, to point the pistol up when you cock it, or twist it to the side when you cock it, if muzzle direction is being watched, and/or a safety issue, like in a match. (not pointing over a burm, or whatever). Helps keep a cap from falling in the action. I dont shoot c&b's too...
