.50 cal receipe for eastern Whitetails?

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking along the same lines - starting with 75 gr and working up. I figure I'll shoot a 3-ball group, running a wet/dry patch between shots, working my way up 5-gr. at a time. Sound like a plan? By the way Jaqua's in Findlay, Ohio has a very nice .54 Browning...

.50 cal receipe for eastern Whitetails?

Need a good (strong) recepie for shooting eastern whitetails in Michigan and Indiana. I am shooting a .50 cal PRB (.490 ball) Hawken with plenty of barrel using FFF powder. ThanX

Where to buy good and affordable longrifles

Don't forget to look at The Log Cabin in Lodi, OH. They have some very nice guns made by local builders at very reasonable prices and they are great to deal with.

Max load for a .40 cal.

Pawbill, I am not sure of the barrel manufacturer, but I'll find out. The componets and workmanship are pretty much top shelf so I would assume the barrel is also higher-end. How is the gun for squirrel? I have had people look at me like I was nuts when I told them I would be using a .40 for...

How hard should it be to pull a ball?

    Now that's logical. Thanks, Doublegun

Max load for a .40 cal.

What would be the max load for my .40 using FFF? Say I was hunting deer-sized game (and a .40 was legal) what load would you use?

How hard should it be to pull a ball?

Not really sure where to post this question but here it comes: last weekend I dry-balled my .40 flinter. I screwed in the ball puller, shoved the rod down the barrel, gave it a few twists and was able to pull out the ball with ease. On a previous occasion I dry-balled my .50 cap-gun and had...

Stopped at the Log Cabin today...

Well I finally got out to shoot the flinter this weekend. I have a feeling that this was a mistake...that was a lot of fun! Using a .395 ball, .015 prelube patch and 35 gr of FFF, with a little in the pan, the gun shoots like a champ. 1st shot at the paper was 1" to the right at 35 yards...

Nathan, I am still on the road and will not be home until Friday. I'll try to post a picture and details as soon as I get settled. Doublegun

Stopped at the Log Cabin today...

Well I finally made it to the Log Cabin this afternoon. Went in to look around for an hour or so and I walked out with a new .40 Southern Mountian flinter and the trappings to go with it. I have been thinking of getting a .36 for a while but this .40 felt too good to pass up, very well...

    GPR barrels

Ok, your standard .54 GPR weights in at approx 9 lbs. Anyone want to guess what a .32 would weight? I have to think it would push 10 lbs, easy. That's a lot of weight to carry around for a .32.

    GPR barrels

A .36 cal barrel for a GPR? Oh, be still my heart...does anyone make one?

    Log Cabin in Lodi, OH

I called the shop this PM and was told that they always have a pretty good inventory and that they would help me find the gun I want. I could not ask for more. I may take my .50 Plains with me to see if they can fit a .58 barrel for it. I could buy a GPR for aprox $100 less at Mid-South, but...

    Log Cabin in Lodi, OH

Been spending a lot of time in Ohio this year and it looks like I'll be spending a lot more over the next few months. I am going to buy a GPR and am wondering if the Log Cabin normally carries a pretty good inventory. I realize that I could save $100 by buying from MidSouth, but I want to be...

    .50 vs .54 percussion GPR

$7,500 for a real Hawken? PM me with the guy's phone number, that's a gun I might be interested in.
  17. J

Who makes a good .32 or .36 percussion rifle?

I looked at a couple of Crocket rifles this summer at a local shop and both had metal ramrods. The guns were new and still in the box. Do these guns have a hooked breech so the barrel can be removed and put in a bucket for easy cleaning? Thanks.

    Resist the temptation?

The barrel on my rifle is 35-1/2" to the breech plug. Anybody know how much weight I can save by going .54? You are correct - it is not just weight, it is balance. My gun is not balanced well - way barrel heavy. I could also go with a shorter barrel but then I have to use a shorter ramrod...

    Resist the temptation?

I have an old .50 cal Hawken type gun made by an aquaintance and this is my only ML. This is a big gun and a joy to shoot but a bear to carry. Every time I pick up a GPR I get the urge to buy a .54. Great gun and the feel much more lively than my .50. So,... should I give in a buy a GPR or...
