Antique Arms Show - Novi, Mich

I have been a couple of times and probably won't ever go back. Way too much junk, and I do mean junk. The 3-4 guns that were interesting were way over priced. Lots of worn out military stuff. Big waste of time for me.

    S. Hawken rifle - revisited

Unbelievable stuff, LEJ. Just spectacular. Beyond that I am speechless, well almost. I had to remind myself that these were just tools 165 years ago. I am sure that the owners took care of them and performed basic maintenance, but like any tool subjected to hard work there is natural wear...

    Pictures of an "original Hawken."

Is it possible that someone took a barrel from a damaged destroyed Hawken and fit it to a gun made by someone else?

Need some help with .32 cal.

So how difficult is the gun to clean?

    Pictures of an "original Hawken."

Found this post on a duck hunting BB. This does not look like any Hawken I have ever seen. Thoughts? http://www.duckboats.net/forum/wwwboard.html

Need some help with .32 cal.

GMA, I have looked at getting a Crocket and probably will. Does the gun have a hooked breech and is it easy to take the barrel off for cleaning? Thanks.

    Traditions Crocket: historically accurate?

Regardless of the guns owned my Mr. Crocket, himself, I was wondering about guns used in the midwest at that approximate time period. Does anyone think that they are representative in terms of materials used and configuration?

    Traditions Crocket: historically accurate?

Not that it really matters but is the Crocket Rifle representative of guns used at that time? They appear to be very similar to the Vincent Ohio Half-stock. Opinions? Thanks.

    Traditions Hawken

I looked at a couple of Crocket rifles last week. Overall, I was a little disappointed with the way the guns looked - they just looked a little cheap, but heck for $280 what should I expect. I was also suprised at the variation in wood. One of the guns looked like it came out of a high school...

    .58 caliber 20 shot test

Thanks Stumpkiller. Given I don't get to shoot too much, what is the best commercially available substitute for Moose Snot? Thanks again.

    .58 caliber 20 shot test

Here comes the rookie question - you use moose milk/snot as lube? What are the pros/cons over something like Bore Butter? Just curious. Thanks

    Black Bear with roundball

Bear bait? Pie, honey, old doughnuts, peanut butter, more honey, old rotting meat, grease from a commercial fryer/trap, a little more honey..... covered with logs. There are a lot of bear in the UP where I hunt grouse and I always have trouble keeping the dogs out of bear bait. You can often...

    Replacement barrel for custom gun?

The barrel is 1" and 35-1/2" to the breech plub, with two keys. It is a hook with a snail. Like I said, I want a barrel for hunting - nothing fancy. Buck horn rear sight and blade up front. I think I would like to keep the barrel length the same (so I can use the same RR). What about twist...

    Replacement barrel for custom gun?

Last fall I bought a beautiful .50 cal Hawkin made by a guy I know in Indiana. He had built the gun back in 1983. Now I am thinking that I would like a .58 cal barrel for it. How much do you think I should have to spend to have one of the local guys here in MI (a VERY reputable builder) fit a...

    Browning Hawkens

I would not say that it was Ithaca that began manufacturing SxS guns again, it was a fellow who licensed the name. The guns were spectacular, as they should be starting at over $3,000 and heading up fast. Alas, the reserection ended last year when the company manufacturing the "Ithacas" closed...

When would be a good time to go to Friendship if I am looking for a .36/.40 Ohio or Vincent halfstock? Thanks

    Browning Hawkens

As of last Wednesday evening (04/07) there was one in the Gun Room at Cabela's in Dundee, MI. I don't recall the price. I have seen 2-3 there in the past year. I believe the price has usually been $750-$800, but I could be wrong.

    Point of impact change?

How about using shooting sticks? I have never used them but I would think that they could be pretty useful to solve this problem.
