    French Rifles

You mean did they not notice the charge in their weapon and keep loading charge after charge? That happened man times. Or are you asking if they fired double balls? Maybe but I doubt often. When firing paper cartridges, each has one ball in it. Possibly before an action NCOs might have had them...

    "Turn" on AMC

    That DOES look good!

    French Rifles

Yes, muskets could be reloaded much faster than the rifles and it didn't take as long to train a soldier to use a musket. The old column vs. line debate. :stir: Usually I don't think the French intended to attack in column--columns were for traversing the battlefield. The idea was to get the...

    Traditional muzzleloading on the wane?

There are a few games that involve flintlocks: Mount&Blade Warband: Napoleonic Wars is a first person online multi-player game. Apparently you can load and shoot muskets, cannons, stand in line and shoot, etc. I've never tried it because I live out in the boonies and can only get dialup but if I...

    French Rifles

Only the officers and NCOs of the voltigeurs of the legere companies carried rifles and you're right, they were officially withdrawn in 1807 or 1808 but I've wondered myself how many held onto them. Essentially officers armed themselves so there probably was a wide variety. What did the...

I thought i found a local source for Goex

And here I've never gotten the Swiss because I didn't want to pay $22.50! I figured the $15.75 for Schutzen or Goex was enough. I guess I didn't realize how spoiled I was being able to stop at a wholesaler on a semi-regular basis.

I thought i found a local source for Goex

Funny, I find I start shooting more in the cold weather. Not sure why that is!

I thought i found a local source for Goex

Wow, I thought the $24.95 at my local store (about 45 minutes away) was bad! That's good in a pinch but I usually just wait until the occasional trip to Maine. I drive by a wholesaler who also sells retail Schutzen and Goex for under $16 a pound.

    Debating on a flintlock pistol

Took the new dragoon pistol out last weekend, fired the last 15 .595 balls I had on hand. No delay, perfect ignition. Had the lock service done by Earl Kathan. Shot a shot or two few shots at 5 paces, but mostly at ten and 20 and one at 25 (which was a miss). Trigger pull is not heavy but it...

    Water temp for cleaning

I suspected I might but I appreciate all the different perspectives! So is there a concern with guns that have pinned barrels? Obviously one isn't going to unpin the barrel to clean the gun. Will using very hot water on such a gun affect the wood in the stock if the barrel is very hot? With my...

    Triggers/Military Channel

Yup, that's why it's not done except for demonstration purposes. Apparently at one time at reenactments they did use them and people wee hit by flying ramrods! :shocked2: I've yet to make it to a European reenactment but I've heard at some of them ramrods are still used but don't know if that's...

    Northwest Passage

Well, I finally got around to getting the "Northwest Passage" TV series from the 50s on Netflix. Not great but watchable and each episode is about 30 minutes, though the transfer to DVD was rough. At least the flintlocks look like flintlocks but the Eastern Indians live in teepees and all the...

    Triggers/Military Channel

At military reenactments ramrods aren't used since blanks are fired so there's no danger of having a ramrod through your hand then. I know people who live fire their Besses and 1777s with paper cartridges with balls like this all the time (and I've done it a few times myself though usually I...

    Debating on a flintlock pistol

In the end I ended up getting a dragoon from Earl an Kathy Kathan. Arrived Wednesday. Will probably shoot it tomorrow. Photos to come later.

    1777 French Muskets

I agree, it's a great feature. The question is when did it start. As far as I know 1777 though the OP heard it started 1809-1815 when boys started being conscripted, which to me doesn't hold water. They really didn't start conscripting a lot of 18 and 19 year olds or younger until 1813 (20 years...

    Triggers/Military Channel

Right, with paper cartridges it's difficult to save powder for priming after pouring the main charge. At military reenactments priming is always done first, though of course the hammer stall is an added safety if used when priming first.

Middlesex vs. Discriminating General The Same!

I wondered the same thing, that he worked for them. It would have been better if he were honest about it. Funny thing is, I looked into it a little and suspect he might be right, at least some of their manufacturers might be the same. The company that someone else mentioned is DG's supplier got...

    1777 French Muskets

It wasn't done 20 years after the Revolution, it was done in 1777, during the American Revolution and prior to the French Revolution.

    1777 French Muskets

That's the first I ever heard that myth. As far as I know it was an integral part of the Model 1777 from its design in 1777. It was certainly well established as part of it by the time of the Year IX (1800) variant or "correction."

Middlesex vs. Discriminating General The Same!

I think he was referring to the Narragansett Indian tribe.
