    NMLRA membership increase

The NMLRAS web site https://www.nmlra.org/join says "NMLRA Membership from $50.00" as of tonight, Oct. 1st. "

    NMLRA membership increase

I doubt it. Earlier this month i was in contact with the clubs lady, about our club getting into NMLRA's membership-selling program, , and she said $45. A jump to $90 wouldn't make sense. Now, an increase in the shoot fees would be a different question. The shoots should pay for themselves, so...

A question for the 36 caliber shooters

Lee will make a round ball mould to order, so contact them if you can't find what you want. I got two made for my .69 musket and a friend;s, years ago, so i know they will do it. Obviously you should try to test with factory-made .340s before you pay for a custom mould.

    .32 VS .36

What do you think about getting a .32 vs a .36 to teach a grandson to shoot muzzle loaders? He is just turning 7, his father and i would not actually start til he is at least 8. But obviously I want a small rifle with little recoil, it's no use teaching him to flinch.

    Cutting large chunks of lead

A friend of miner once bought a lead elevator counterweight. He used a welding torch to cut it / make it drip into a large iron pot. You have not told us how big this "brick" its. If it is really only about 25 pounds or so (Rotometals sell;s a Lead Brick 2" x 4" x 8" 99.9% Pure weighing 26...

Interesting info from the Lewis and Clark expedition

A few decades ago when I was in Germany, our "Partnership" unit (a reserve unit) used wax bullets for very short range target practice indoors. I don't know how difficult cleaning was, nor what charges they were shooting.. But my point is that you CAN do the equivalent of darts that way. I...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well, yesterday ... I was feeling better though I have the flu. So I rolled some paper cartridges for my .75 matchlock musket. 4 buckshot, 3 buck and ball, 2 ball. My ambition is to hold a shoot off and compare performance of my matchlock with a friend's blunderbuss of the same caliber...

Getting ready to shoot a matchlock as a newbie

You don't even need wadding if you are shooting round ball.. I don't, for any military smoothbore. Buck and ball is a different issue. It may or may not help your accuracy, probably ball size vs. bore size determines that. I wouldn't use leaves or tow because that stuff will just burn, and...

Getting ready to shoot a matchlock as a newbie

I'm glad to see another matchlock shooter coming on board. I make my own match: bought a coil of hemp rope that's going to last decades, use lye from BBQ /wood ashes, bucket it, then soak it in a saturated saltpeter solution, re-twist it tight because as soaking makes it uncoil, then dry it...

    Bullet Mould Idea

Sounds like an interesting experiment. But when you do it, please check for excessive leading and tell su what you find. I always thought that one of the functions of grease over the revolver ball, was to reduce leading when it hit the forcing cone.

    Getting a lot of Misfires.

I have had a very similar experience with my Lyman Great Plains rifle. At first it shot with no problem, then I had big misfire problems. And when I started to have the problem a very good shooter in our club talked to me about cleaning that patent breech. Then I got a cleaning tube and flushed...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Today? Cast .495 balls. I had depleted my supply on Saturday, as point man for a Scout merit badge shoot. Gave out rations of 250 balls (.495, .490, .530), 12,500 grains of powder (the scout plan only has them shooting at 50 feet and 25 yards) , lots of patches and patching material. We...

    .58 caliber?

In addition to Granth's observation that they are fun: Because the Minie system is different from round ball and you have a whole different muzzle loading system to learn with a rifled musket.

    Safe Loading Devices

No, that's wrong: Embers are real. I have been present at two flashes, But both were with rifled muskets, firing fast: One live fire at a skirmish and one with blanks at a reenactment. And neither produced worse than a burned hand, because there was no projectile in the bore yet and the...
