Speaking of the virtues of the deadly roundball...

For some reason the first part of the link will not post correctly...perhaps because it's from another ML site. In any event, here's what a fella posted about the good 'ol RB. --------------------------------------- Well this is not going to please anyone trying to sell "new and improved" but...

Speaking of the virtues of the deadly roundball...

Go down 'bout 1/2 way thru this thread and read about the virtues of the deadly roundball. Interesting stuff. http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534577 Makes you wonder why people keep putting those pistol projectiles in those little plastic thingies.

    Sizing in Patch Material

Yeah, same here. After hand washing and rinsing in hot water, I let it air dry over my front porch railing for an afternoon. The dried ticking sheets are usually a bit firm feeling and wrinkled as heck...no way it will lay flat. A hot steaming iron set to "cotton" takes care of the wrinkles...

    Sizing in Patch Material

Did you notice a difference in the patch's ability to absorb whatever patch lube you were using? My hunch is that the prewashed patch material would take the lube better and not just run off. Did you notice any difference in pressure needed to seat the ball at the muzzle or force needed to...

    patch cutter advice?

Hmmm....very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Just for the heck of it one day with my .45 cal Seneca I'm gonna shoot a 10 shot string at 50 yards with my normal 1.125" square patches and then another 10 shot string with 1.45" square patches (58 cal). I always thought that having a hunk of...

    Reboring a rifle barrel

Bob Hoyt 700 Fairfield Station Road, Fairfield, Pennsylvania, USA 17320, 717-642-6696 You may need to call several times as he's sometimes difficult to get ahold of. Please post whatever info he tells you as I'm also considering getting an older barrel rebored (to 58 cal 1-70 round bottom...

    patch cutter advice?

I read somewhere that when cutting square patches, a good rule of thumb is to cut them 2.5 * caliber. So, patches for a 45 cal should be around 1.125 (2.5 * .45) or 1 1/8". With this in mind, I cut my patches: .45 cal - 1.125" .50 cal - 1.25" .54 cal - 1.35" (or just eyeballing a bit larger...

    Alcohol patches during cleaning.

Never heard that before, but seems to make sense. I've always mixed 91% alcohol with windshield washer fluid...50/50. Makes a nice field cleaner as well.

    Speer vrs Hornady RB

Same here; both have always loaded and shot the same in my rifles. However, most of the time I see the Hornady's for slightly less than Speer. Maybe Speer charges more to cover the added cost of the plastic box. Hmmm.. Have yet to find a cheaper site than MidSouth Shooting supplies either...

    Home made patch lube/bore wipe

Right. Just have to remember to mix the castor oil with the alcohol first, shake well, then mix with the distilled water. Made the mistake once of mixing castor oil with distilled water, then added the alcohol. What I was left with was an alcohol smelling water with a nice oil skim floating...

Renegade barrel with QLA...what to do ?

Thanks for all feedback guys. Since this is my first barrel with the QLA, I wasn't sure if it had the potential to be a RB shooter or not. From all of your experiences, it sounds like it does. Happy to hear that. Since I cut patches at the muzzle also, I'll watch for the ball possibly...

Renegade barrel with QLA...what to do ?

I just recently purchased a brand new unshot .50 cal Renegade, but it has the QLA at the end of the barrel. Didn't realize it before I purchased. My intention was the shoot RBs exclusively out of it. Anyway, I've read that the QLA sometimes causes fits when you shoot RBs as the ball partially...

    .018 VS .015 thick patch

Zonie - Great point 'bout the fabric becoming bunny soft. Yeah, that's kinda what happened to the Wally World fabric that became no more the chewed patch fodder. Now I'm beginning to think that there must have been trace amounts of fabric softner in the cloths washer that broke the cotton...

    .018 VS .015 thick patch

Got it. Air dry it is. I was unsure whether heated drying would perhaps tighten the weave (shrink the material like when you accidentally shrink a cotton T-shirt by putting it in the drier at a high heat setting or for to long a cycle)...but at the expense of softening the fabric and perhaps...

    .018 VS .015 thick patch

Really dumb question, but after you take the fabric out of the washer, should you air dry it or put it in the dryer? If putting in the dryer, what heat level would you recommend? I'm asking this since I'm wondering if the manner in which the drill or ticking is dried affects the tightness...

    KIK powder review?

I guess I have somewhat different thoughts on Kik. I put it side by side with Goex and Schuetzen...all FF on the range one day. Testing in both my .50 and .54 cal Investarms Hawkens. Although I couldn't tell much of a difference in accuracy, I could definitely tell a difference in fouling...

    Question about making wad

I'm also a satisfied Ohio Ramrod customer. He builds 'em right to your specs for a very reasonable fee. His punches are very sharp as well. I've read conflicting reports on the cheaper China punches.

    Swabbing at the range

Exactly what I do too. Sometimes I use a mixture of 50% alcohol (91%) + 50% windshield washer fluid. Dries nice 'n quick.

Round groove vs square cut rifling?

Lots of good info in your post...thanks for sharing. Been considering ordering a custom round bottom barrel myself for RB shooting. Of today's custom barrel makers, any idea if any follow Harry Pope's from a technical perspective? Put differently, who would you recommend for a custom barrel...

    Re-bore a 50 cal t-c

After reading several posts speaking of the high quality work that Bob Hoyt does, I gotta call he and get his thoughts about a job I've been thinking about for years. Although I have a TC Encore, it's been sitting pretty much unused for the last 10 years since I prefer shooting round balls...
