    J&S Hawken dueling pistols

Actually, the description of "acceptable" dueling pistols was written by John Lyde Wilson, who was even one time Governor of South Carolina. Chapter VII, Paragraph 1 states especially, "The arms should be smoothbore pistols, not exceeding nine inches in (barrel) length, with flint and steel...

    Northwest trade gun kit

TOTW will fit and install breech plugs for $25.00. They offer an number of services for a fair price for those who aren't set up or feel capable of some of the building processes.

50 cal not hitting broadside of barn

It still may be a problem with twist rate and ball diameter. I've seen fast twist rifles shoot PRB but required larger balls, usually no smaller than .005" less diameter than the bore with thinner patches. The guys I know who did this in a .50 caliber used balls as large as .498" plus a .010" to...

    Front sight only on BB

Basically, all the info is right. You need to develop that 'cheek weld' and be consistent with it. You can't guarantee the bayonet lug will be high enough to use as sight, so holding the same way each time and shooting enough to get the 'feel' for where the shots going.

    L/R side slapper

Oh yes, was very aware of the Jenks being a true breech loader, but it's the only 'mule ear' percussion gun adopted by the U.S. Navy so we have to make allowances! :haha:

    1842 Smoothbore

12th New Jersey used a buck & ball on top of their monument at Gettysburg. http://gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/NJ12-4c-448-049.png 90th Pennsylvania did a couple. Here's their 'Eagle' monument...

    1842 Smoothbore

Tenngun is right, each gun is kind of it's own case and what works well in one may give you barely minute-of-circus-tent accuracy in another. Smoothbores are a little less so but there's no telling what combo it'll like best. Try patched and unpatched ball with combos of wads and cards. Buck &...

    Notable shooting experiences

At our state sponsored shoots all the kids get to fire, twice at least. But, you are right in what you say. It's the little ones, girls especially...those that look like they don't weigh 80 pounds with the pockets full of buckshot and fishing sinkers that do the best, enjoy it most and leave...

    Notable shooting experiences

Twice, that's right gang I said twice, I forgot to hold the muzzle away from vertical and got a flashback from an ember in the bore. Foosh! Not a single unsinged hair from the tip of my chin to about 3 inches into my hairline. Looked like Al Jolson in black-face, smelled like a scorched poodle...
