How Does a Touch Hole Liner Improve Reliability?

Larry Pletcher's testing found that a liner increased ignition speed a small amount (around 10% I believe) for clean unfouled barrels and liners. The main difference noted was how much cleaner the coned liner stayed as opposed to a long parallel sided hole. His conclusion was this is the main...

Skill - barrel making - where to learn

If you have the itch for machining a barrel, a pistol might be a good choice.

    Copy of an original blunderbuss

One thing very interesting... A straight taper can tend to look bulged even though it isn't. This is true with other items such as architectural columns etc. Historically, these were sometimes made to have a slight curve (think of a very slightly swamped barrel) such that they appear...

    How to polish this sideplate

Careful with the rotary tools such as a Dremel. They tend to remove material indiscriminately and result in features being rounded etc. Jim

    Woodsrunner build help....

This can work fine, but buy having two screws at the angle of the barrel flats, it tends to pull the stock and nosecap together better.

    Who charcoal blues Fowler barrels

Be careful using significant heat on our barrels. The sights and lugs are soft soldered on so they will fall off if you exceed the solder melting point. This is significantly below the temperature associated with "temper blue"

    How to polish this sideplate

Stones will be your best friend. I like those from Congress Tools. The soft, super soft and y-oil work well for me. 1/8" square will be best. You can shape these easily with a coarse piece of abrasive paper, a belts sander etc. Jim

Kibler stocks OK for a lefty?

Yes, we can too, but currently choose not to for good business reasons. How is this so hard to understand? I'll not apologize for running our business as well as it can be. Remember, we don't owe anyone anything. Let's just say, that we are a significantly different company than Chambers or L&R.

    Repair or replace

Not sure what happened here, but you have our apologies. Sometimes you get drying checks across the grain in really curly wood, but this doesn't seem the case. Regardless we can get you a new stock if you want or if you would rather try to repair this the new stock is a standing offer in case...

    Poorly Assembled Brown Bess Lock

The only good thing about all of these junk locks is that they can train you as to what a lock should be from the rebuild process. I learned more about locks from this process than anything else!

Soldering barrel lugs and sight, success!

We solder a lot of underlugs and sights on our fowler barrels. First, soft solder is more than strong enough. We've experimented with a lot of different solders and have found a past 60/40 lead tin solder with a strong acid flux to be best. Here is the product we use: SSE-360-851 Solder...

    Kibler lock rebuilds

We're sorry if we misplaced your lock. Just a reminder... We stand behind our products 100%. If you think something isn't right, send it back and we will make it right if there is something wrong. As to tuning, I totally disagree. This is something that the average builder shouldn't...

    Opinion on maple stock

That's just changes in grain direction (curl, figure). When more end grain is exposed it soaks up more stain and turns darker. I think it looks nice and you've done a very good job of sanding and finishing your stock.

    Frizzen Face Texture

I couldn't care if there is a region the flint doesn't scrape. In my view it is of no significance.

I agree. We'd be happy to make one out of it if you'd like. Thanks

    Unique piece of Sugar Maple

As a general rule, big leaf (Western) maple is pretty soft for longrifle work. I've seen some that is adequate, but much isn't.

Woodsrunner Matchbox Lid too tight now

If you take a three cornered file and grind the end perfectly flat, you can push it and it will act as a scraper. This generally cuts better than the teeth on a file.

    How Indian flintlocks are made

I've always enjoyed watching videos of workshops or factories from India, Pakistan etc. There's lots of them making various things on Youtube. For me there is usually always something to learn. So often with manufacturing here in the states we think a job requires the best and most modern...
