But the “volume” is actually based on “weight “.

    4f priming powder...

99.9% of people are not competitive shooters. Most punch holes in paper or hunt. I’ve shot competition for 30 years and hunted for way longer. I don’t load the the same way for both activities.

    4f priming powder...

I believe for most of history, if it went down the barrel, it went in the pan.

    Trade gun rear sight

Smoothbores with rear sights were called smooth rifles and are perfectly historically correct.

"Use of shot is not permitted"

I don’t know about other states, but here’s Georgia regs: Shotguns- 20 gauge or larger loaded with slugs or buckshot. When hunting deer, it is not required to have a plug in the magazine of the shotgun and there is no magazine capacity restriction. And I believe Alabama is the same.

    casting question

Lead fumes and lead dust do not have an odor, so you may not know you are being exposed. cdc.gov OSHA To each their own.

    casting question

You’ll never get lead hot enough for “fumes” or “vapor” casting bullets.

    casting question

Melted lead doesn’t have an odor, any more than solid lead. If you have odor, it’s from contaminates or fluxing.

    Muzzleloaders and firearm laws

It could very well have been original. As far as I know, all Winchester 1873’s were serial numbered. Mine certainly was, pre 1900.

Do you prefer 3F or 4F for priming ?

If it goes down the barrel, it goes in the pan.

    Maybe tin? Surely not zinc.

I Hope To Meet With Lead Casting Folks

That’s true for revolvers. They need pure lead for easy loading. Hard lead would make loading difficult and likely bend the loading lever. Not so much with rifles and smoothbores. Rifles with patches and smoothbores with their windage can shoot pretty much what fits down the bore.

I Hope To Meet With Lead Casting Folks

Using the equipment we use, we'll likely never get lead hot enough to 'fume'. If you smell something, it's impurities or flux. Lead melts at 621°F. Fumes are released at 900°F+. You're more likely to ingest lead from not washing your hands.
