Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

I prefer the Lee 300gr REAL bullet in my Lyman GP 54, 1/60 twist, for elk. . 100grs of 777, 2F. Will far out penetrate the RB. I'm 77 & 146 lbs & don't find the recoil to be a problem. Great accuracy. Just a thought if one of those tough angled shots is encountered . The rib cage is easy to...

Rebore to 54 caliber tc hawkens

Lee 54 cal 300gr "REAL" bullet mold. Super easy to cast. No more problem to cast than a RB. Cast, lube & shoot . Easy . I lube with Bore Butter , unsalted lard , talo made from the melted fat from last seasons game, etc. I use no wads. Lee 2-Cavity Bullet Mold 54-300-REAL 54 Cal (557...

Rebore to 54 caliber tc hawkens

I have a Lyman GP 54 cal Hawken. 1/60 twist. It shoots the Lee 300gr "REAL" bullet accurately. The Lee 54 300 "REAL" is only slightly longer than the RB, so stabilizes well in the 1.60 twist. . Picture of RB & 300gr "REAL". My 50 yd target ( picture 4 shots ) with the REAL & 100gr charge. Yes...

    #10 or #11 Caps

About 10 years ago I bought this gizmo. It is a nipple replacement that uses a small pistol/rifle center fire primer. Screw it in to where your nipple goes. Insert a small center fire primer . Screw the top back on, & shoot. For what it is worth. Not sure if they are still in production.

    #10 or #11 Caps

As I stated, the priming compound in home made caps is highly corrosive. Black powder is also highly corrosive because it contains sulfur. My preference for powder is Hodgon Tripple 7 , FFg. It contains no sulfur. So, non corrosive commercial caps ( if you can find them ) along with a BP no...

    #10 or #11 Caps

Keep in mind that the priming compound in the home made caps , while working just fine, is highly corrosive. You need to be extra careful with a very thorough cleaning. Commercial caps are non corrosive. Just need to be aware.

    #10 or #11 Caps

I, like you can not find any caps. Cabella's ,Scheels, ,Sportsmans Wharehouse, etc ( Missoula, Mt. ) have none. Have gone on line, & like you , find you have to spend big bucks to get any. I have about 100 on hand, which will get me thru this next hunting season if I don't practice too much. To...

    Lyman 54 GPR

Since the Lee REAL 300 gr is so short, barely longer than a RB , the 1/60 twist seems to be made for them. The reason I want the 300gr is for our elk season. I feel much more comfortable with the heavier 300gr weight. Has to have better penetration than the RB.

    Lyman 54 GPR

Shot my Lyman 1/60 twist 54 GPR today. Lee 300gr "REAL" & 100grs "American Pioneer Powder, 3F. I realize this powder is long out of production, but is what I have. Triple 7 2F powder is no where to be found. Range , 50yds. Four shots. 75 & 100tds will have to wait till the snow melts back a...

    Hoppies #9 solvent

As a follow up. Three days after cleaning my ML with Hoppies . Checked rifle each day with a tight fitting white cleaning patch. It came out clean & white every time. Carefully inspected the bore every day. Absolutely bright/ shinny . Not the slighest sign of any thing, except a bright/shinny...

    Hoppies #9 solvent

Anyone ever use Hoppies #9 solvent as a BP bore cleaner ? Suppose to remove carbon, lead & copper. Biodegradable & non flammable. Would there be any negative reasons for not using it?

    RB or REAL bullet

Here in Montana our Muzzle loader season is still a primitive weapons hunt. No inline shooters. Front loaders only. As to the projectile, " Must only use plain lead projectiles". "Skirts or gas checks on the base of the projectiles are acceptable". Our big game season here runs deer & elk at...
