Anyone ever use Hoppies #9 solvent as a BP bore cleaner ? Suppose to remove carbon, lead & copper. Biodegradable & non flammable. Would there be any negative reasons for not using it?

I use it on my unmentionables and as an after shave cologne. Does that count?

There is a Hoppes Black Powder Solvent and Patch lube as well. Bottles look the same. Get the right one. It works excellent and will clean up your rifles etc. well (like plain water will). As a patch lube ya shoot all day without swipping. Down side is it can dry-out/rust as a hunting load if left longer than the day. I fire and clean daily anyway so no issue. GET SOME. The regular may work but get the right stuff and use as a patch lube only.

Deposit's left from shooting BP and the sub's are water soluble, The Hoppes9 Solvent (which I also use for other guns) is made to remove deposits of nitro powders and modern projectiles.
It's not going to be an effective solution to remove the water soluble parts of the BP.
It could be used to help clean any lead deposits from an already properly cleaned barrel but there are better more specific products available for that.
I'm fond of their Hoppes9 gun oil and use it for locks, triggers, bore and surface protection all the time.
Hoppes9 Solvent has had a trusted place in my gun care regime for decades,, just not for BP bore cleaning,

The original Hoppe's #9 was made for smokeless cartridge guns. It's mostly Kerosene & was a poor bore cleaner for copper or carbon removal. Works good on 22 rimfire & shotguns but would be a disaster on Black Powder. If you are talking about the Black Powder Hoppe's Solvent I'm not sure why one would want to spend money on it, as soapy water is the best BP bore cleaner ever. YMMV.

I won a large bottle a number of years ago. I have used it as a lube and it works great. Soap and water makes a better bore cleaner.
Per my above post use as a patch lube (part of the name) and shoot all day w/o wiping/cleaning. Water cant be beat for clean up

That's funny Woody. My wife has always said they should make an man's after shave that smells like Hoppes #9. She's a keeper, we've been married for nearly 40 years.
For me, the older formula for Hoppes was a much better scent than the present one.
Just like everything else . . . .when things are made to be “right” . . . .someone says, “Change it!”

I like all Hoppes products for my unmentionables. I had a talk with a guy at the range that tried to clean his BP gun with the mineral spirits based solvents and quit because the fouling was overwhelming and turned to tar. My BP firearms are so satisfying to clean. After using soap and water the patches are bright white and clean. No matter how many patches I run through my unmentionables, there's always some gray on the patch. Don't have any desire to use anything but soap and water on my muzzleloaders, since it works so well.
Before it was changed from a good solvent to a less good solvent I used a lot of Hoppes. Since it has been altered there are a lot of better solvents out there. Best cleaner I've found for my BP stuff is plain water.

As a follow up. Three days after cleaning my ML with Hoppies . Checked rifle each day with a tight fitting white cleaning patch. It came out clean & white every time. Carefully inspected the bore every day. Absolutely bright/ shinny . Not the slighest sign of any thing, except a bright/shinny bore. I will continue to monitor every day. Not saying I'm giving up hot soapy water, but also not saying there is no other effective way to thyoughly clean a ML bore.
