    Rose Damascus Dueling Pistol Set

So what you have there is not a pair of dueling pistols. Paired pistols were not always for duels, and by the caplock era these would be too small. They are a pair of gentleman's self-defense pocket pistols. Screw barrels work by removing the barrel and filling the chamber, then placing a...

    Ever see one of these?

Actually that would probably simply have lobbed a bunch of powder and an extra projectile out, but IF you fired the forward load, and the seal was wrong between that and the rear load, that might be spectacular. LD

    Very small caplock pistol…thoughts?

Ah a screw-barrel pistol. You'd unscrew the barrel, and fill the chamber completely with 3fg. Place the ball on top to close the chamber, then screw the barrel down over top of the ball, until the barrel was flush with the rest of the assembly. Simply add a cap, and be sure the pistol was on...

Caplock conversion in War of 1812?

So that looks like a very old and beat-up "Indian gun", once used by a Native American. "Black Rock" is likely the Black Rock desert area, which is between Fenly, NV and Denlo NV (South to North) and Sulphur, NV and Swede's Place (East to West). The area in present day is smaller than the...

    Brazier/double brazier stands

Speaking of which, we had a drought warning a few decades back in the late 1990's, and the events all were required to have "no open flame" rules enforced, which said no open campfires with wood or charcoal or briquets. So a LOT of us got braziers back then. BUT what about the "fellowship...

    CURIOUS ABOUT CONICALS

So the barrels accept round ball of .310, .350, .390..., Usually with at least a .010 patch of cloth around the ball, and often with a .015 patch. So the ball engaging the rifling is .320-.325, or .360-.365, and .400-.405. That piece of cloth is a gasket of sorts, and compresses, while those...

    CURIOUS ABOUT CONICALS

They are very similar to a minie ball, but you won't find any made for a .40. For a .40 you'll have to get a custom mold made. The advantage is the ease of loading, and in smaller calibers the better trajectory and more mass at impact. The LEE company makes a variation known as the REAL...

IS THIS A SAFE SHOOTING BARREL?

There are 24,000 listed members, and if only 10% are active that's 2400 people..., so no reason why a handful of folks complaining about caps-locked should drive anybody away. Just an opinion. LD

    How old is this powder?

Dupont halted manufacture of black powder May 16th, 1945. It was a common practice from the 1950's into the 1980's that members of BP clubs would buy a 25 lb. keg of black powder, and the members would re-use old powder cans when splitting up that keg. So the can is 80 years old or older. Is...

A question for shooters who make their caps

Agreed, the stuff will cause rusting if not cleaned. While it won't really hurt a stainless steel nipple, it will runs the barrel area surrounding where the nipple is placed AND inside the channel that directs the cap-flash to the powder. LD

Miroku 1766 Charleville having Hammer/Frizzen Problems

No but I think you need to remove the cloth around the flint and replace it with leather, and consider a proper lead wrap. You may add grease to where the cam on the frizzen engages the upper surface of the frizzen spring, but you might also look hard at that cam and the upper surface of that...

What caliber ball are youo using?

For accurate shooting I like .590 with a paper cartridge. I had to look hard to find a Rapine mold in that size For speed shooting in a competition, I use .530 in a paper cartridge, as I can't wipe between shots. LD

Help - Looking for Flintlock tang screw help or a gunsmith

Yes if you can get a small enough flame on the screw as the trigger plate on the Bess is not very wide. HOWEVER, I would be worried that it wasn't a dremel, but some ham-fisted DIY man using a metal chisel, and so has effectively "staked" that tang screw in place on the tang. I think it better...
