When was the last percussion shotgun sold in the United States

Alas, using that for waterfowl 🦆was/is frowned upon by the U.S. Dept of The Interior, as the largest bore that can be use is a 10 bore (.775) and the .90 is between a 6 and 7 gauge. Might do a number on an Elephant if you can get close enough..., don't miss though...🐘 LD

Help identifying “W Allport” octagonal barrel percussion cap rifle

Good Morning. To check if it's loaded, put the ramrod down the barrel, then mark the ramrod where it exits the muzzle. Remove the ramrod and lay it along side the barrel and see where the tip of the ramrod is in comparison to the breech, using your mark as a reference against the edge of the...

I think I know the model of this cap & ball replica, but not the manufacturer.

Folks this was moved to Handguns because the Firearm Identification area is for "Need help identifying an original, pre-1865 muzzleloading firearm? " The bold black portion is how it appears under the name of the thread area on the menu. LD

An opportunity to buy a custom rifle

Well you got yourself a good rifle from external appearances. The frizzen marks show it seems not to have been fired much. LD

PRB thru a mod choke ???

Yeah the cylinder bore should work, OR you might also try a bare ball with a 1/2" fiber wad between the ball and powder, and a crushed paper wad, or even another 1/2" wad over the ball..., with the final wad very well lubed. So imp/mod and mod/full chokes came out over the years I'm told due...

An opportunity to buy a custom rifle

You should first, be sure it's not loaded when you handle it. You'd be surprised at how many times when I've looked at a muzzleloader at a LGS, I've found it was loaded and the clerk had been waving the muzzle all over the place. Then inspect the bore. The best way is to get a cheap...

    Unknown smoothbore caplock. European proofs.

Um... I'm going to say that looks like one of those 1842 Augustin (Austrian) tube-lock muskets that were converted to caplock and then sold for the American Civil War (ACW). LD

Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle?

Yes that matches the pattern of the Ultra-Hi flintlock rifles from the 1970's-1980's. Miroku was the maker, and they were made in Japan. Normally there was a faux patch box on the right side, but otherwise the hardware is correct. Might be a very late version where they omitted the faux...

    Vent hole location?

Um any idea why if this was his "reliable favorite", why he sold it? It might be fine. Consider that if one is in the field hunting deer, one often has the muzzle down. The powder in the pan would then collect up against the touch hole. It might "hang" a bit, or it might be just fine, and the...

    Percussion gun identification

Yeah, but you will really need a special tool. IF you're going to have it checked by a pro then have that guy check for a choke. There are two types of choking, "Jug Choke" and "Modern Choke", and as TNGhost mentioned, if it was a Belgian gun made in the 20th century, it might have either. LD

    Percussion gun identification

Looks like a single shot, Belgian trade shotgun. For a shotgun of that period the barrel is rather thick. IF the interior isn't too bad you may be able to replace the nipple and actually use it. IF it's choked it will make a nice squirrel and turkey gun. LD

    redneck rifle rest (modern)

 YEAH WOW it was right there all the time. Heavy, so a little recoil isn't going to topple it. Height adjustable...they just poured a lovely concrete deck at my local range..., they didn't raise the bench height so NOW relative to the deck where the seats are placed, the benches are now...
