    Whether shooting.....

There is generally plenty rain and snow in the northern Rockies this time of year.

    Whether shooting.....

If getting hammer falls without ignition, it just shows the operator isn't fully familiar with their firearm. With my flintlocks, I am aware of my flint condition at every shot. If just plinking, I will try to squeeze out another shot or two before resharpening or replacing, being fully aware...

    North Star West says goodbye

I received word that Matt Denison passed away this afternoon, November 14, 2024. Matt was the last owner of North Star West. He had suffered from kidney disease for several years. He was one of the best guys I ever worked for.

    Wheel weight lead question

The only problems are loading revolvers, leads to bent or broken loading lever, and in long arms shooting conicals it's not so much the hardness, but a limited ability to obdurate and expand the skirt to the bore.

Anyone ever hunt with a handgonne?

But, that is not a handgonne.

Asking for help with a Rifle Shoppe Baker Rifle: groups at 50 yards have become dreadful.

For heavy recoiling firearms, the English shooting bench makes life a lot easier. I made mine with posts set in the ground, with a solid platform on top. Most people don't shoot all that great from a sit down bench, and these take some of the variables out of the equation.

    Buck vs Doe

We're up to a tall squaw's butt with deer here, and antlerless tags are plentiful. One year you could get 28 tags down in the Bitterroot. I shot a doe opening day, just because the weather was nice, and she was close to the meat pole. I have a wall full of antlers from the past 55+ years I...

Asking for help with a Rifle Shoppe Baker Rifle: groups at 50 yards have become dreadful.

I had Jerry Cunningham make me a 1-120 .62 barrel years ago. It took 180 gr. 2F to shoot well. My current .62 has 1-66, and shoots well with 95gr. 3FFF.

Appropriate carving for a Woodsrunner era Kibler kit?

Practice on scrap first. I saw pictures of one a guy "carved". He turned a $1300 kit into a $500 rifle.

What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

The old rule of thumb for shotgun power, shoot a tin can. If the shot penetrates the can, you are good to go. If it just dents the can, nope.

    Hole punch

I use a #11 Osbourne punch for my 20 bore. A set of the punches from Harbor Freight is pretty cheap. I use heavy poster board for my guns. https://www.harborfreight.com/9-piece-hollow-punch-set-3838.html

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

Yes, the long range snipers are slob hunters. They shoot, and if something drops, they are happy. If not, they are too lazy to go see if there is blood way over there, if they can even find that particular spot. I've shot thousand yard matches for over 40 years. The more I shot, the more I...

    Osage Orange for ramrods?

I've never noticed it to be abrasive. When making bows, I have always easily taken it to a polished surface.

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

The thing most hunters lack is good tracking skills, and knowledge of the game they hunt.

    Strap bag vs belt bag?

Probably just a small day horn, some balls and patch maybe carried in a small bag around the neck would work.
