What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I grew a small amount of flax this summer. I rhetted it, and then broke it down in to tow this week. A planter box of around 6" X 24" gave me more than enough tow for a year's supply.

Copper canteen blu green oxidation inside

B.S. I'm an old moonshiner. That green verdigris on copper is poison.

Do you have a muzzleloader with an inexplicable problem?

My poor boy has started hanging around with loose women and drinking an excessive amount to whiskey. I suspect it may also smoke pot on the weekends. I don't know why it does these things, I made it to be a well mannered rifle.

Do you think that modern ML firearms have any investment value?

If they are a production gun, doubtful they will gain value. A quality hand made rifle should gain in value by the time your great grand kids are ready to sell them. If they keep up with inflation. On the other hand, I bought dozens of milsurps over the years, that have sky rocketed in price...

    Cleaning Kibler Woodsrunner?

I HAVE used it to brown barrels. I looked it up. Peroxide is a bleaching agent that can indeed be corrosive to metal and wood and wood finishes. Best to use diluted. I've always said there is something to be learned here every day. Actually I've never used it

    Fowler kicking my tail

I use .595 RB, 60 gr. 3FFF, pillow ticking with moose milk. If I hold well enough it hits where I look. If you can't start a ball with your thumb in a smooth bore, you are loading too tight.

I find by filing a 45 degree angle on the tip of the sight, and leaving it bright, gives me best target acquisition.

    Poorly Assembled Brown Bess Lock

These are the ones who think India guns are just fine. How anyone could allow a firearm to fall into such a state is beyond me.

They were all built on a strong back. Strip construction, some of spruce, some of cedar, with fiberglass over lay. I think around 60 miles is the most we traveled at any one time.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Not today, but looking back on one of our trips with our 32' freighter canoe, on the Marias River. We built four freighters over the years, from 26 to 32'.

    Vent hole location?

The position is no big deal, it will shoot. The bigger concern is the slot running down behind the bolster. It can allow powder into the internals, and will over time act like a tiny cutting torch, damaging the lock. A new vent liner could be made, drilling the vent further back.

    Wheel weight lead question

There was darned little pure lead at the time. Much it was coming from the Mines of Spain at Dubuque and surrounding mines on the Mississippi, and barged to St. Louis for refining. The results was high in sulfur and arsenic content. "Pure" lead today still carries trace amounts of both. As...

    Wheel weight lead question

Some over estimate how much the projectile growth is from wheel weights. Actual growth is around .002, that can be attributed to the antimony in the alloy. .002 ain't nothing.

Personal Care Lubricant for Muzzleloaders-What do you think?

One summer, I did a lot of lube testing. I was surprised to find whale oil was the worst, creating hard fouling in few shots, and was hard to clean. Two of the better ones were Goop hand cleaner, and Vasoline hand lotion. Moose Milk was tops in the testing.

    Schutzen 3F thoughts

I use 3f Schutzen/Grafs in everything from .36 to .62. With Moose Milk, I can shoot all day with bore condition remaining the same, and clean up is easy. I'm on my fifth case, so I must like it.

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

There are poor quality percussion locks, too. I recall a Bedford county rifle I had about 50 years ago with a Russ Hamm lock that was not dependable, and at that time I didn't know how to fix it.

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

Nope, didn't exist at that time.
