Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

Gentlemen shoot flintlocks, as do gentlewomen. With a quality lock, I personally think the flintlock has a faster learning curve.

    Blackening

It washes right off with lacquer thinner or acetone, and is certainly easier to clean up than inletting black. For that matter, I always used those same solvents to clean up the black, since it has an oil base, as does lip stick. Using the oil, I didn't end up looking like a black face minstrel...

I brush on old motor oil.

    Dark Finish on standard maple

    Same thing.

    Dark Finish on standard maple

I used a strong mixture of ferric nitrate, two applications, for a very dark color on one of my poor boys.

Seeds shot? Anything used HC. PC

Years ago, I ran out of shot a couple times when hunting the far side of our farms. I loaded several times with soybeans. They were pretty effective on rabbits out to around 20 yards. You could knock a pheasant out of the air at that range, but seldom would it kill, I would have to run them down.

    Would you trust these threads?

Checked my records, had 16 come into the shop over 42 years with nipples blown out.

    Trade gun for grizzlies

I tell people if they can throw a tennis ball at a wall, and hit it with their pistol, they may have a chance. An old timer told me the best way was to wait until your felt the bears tonsils around your wrist, and start shooting. Bear spray doesn't always work in wind. Jack Hannah, from the old...

    Trade gun for grizzlies

Always carry pepper spray. Griz love the flavor!

    Trade gun for grizzlies

Dogs have a disturbing tendency of bringing a bear directly back to the master, tail between his legs, bear hot on it's trail

    Would you trust these threads?

Looks like grandpa belonged to the "I take the nipple out every time I clean" bunch. This is the results.

Need to get rust out of my bore

I would shoot it and see how it does. I've seen some sewer pipes shoot great.

Need to get rust out of my bore

That's not rust, it's damage from fake powders. The only way to get rid of it is to get it freshed out.

    Muzzleloader Magazine?

Agreed, I find little of interest in it.

Flintlock pistol rested across arm safe ?

Most any odd ball thing you see in a movie most likely was never done in reality. It would put the pistol awful close to the eye, and not be as accurate as a two hand hold.

    Egg tanning a bear hide

Incorrect. Two creatures without enough brain to tan their own hide, are elephants, and teenagers.

    Egg tanning a bear hide

Bear hides are very greasy. I've done them using plain Ivory Snow soap in the past. I kind of suspect Dawn dish washing soap would do a pretty good job.

    Powder Horn Base Plug Question

Shape it like you want it, then take the edge of a file and cut the line to meet.

    Osage Orange for ramrods?

Osage has great flex, but sucks at compression. If you are in the habit of tamping hard, they can split along the grain.

    Rust protection.

I actually use it on the outside of the gun. For some reason, one of the rendezvous held about a hundred miles south of me, is terrible for rusting guns. Even Fluid Film didn't stop it. For those dealing with cosmoline, you might ask your local cleaners. One of the local ones here even used to...
