    RE hardening a frizzen question

If the frizzen is 1095, hardened but not tempered at all, it will break if you look at it wrong, assuming you got full or near full hardness in the quench. If are going to harden a 1095 frizzen your oil should be Parks #50, or canola oil. Being not a blade, but a frizzen, I would use the canola...

    RE hardening a frizzen question

Especially for blades but also in general, the practice of heating high carbon steel to simply reach non-magnetic and then quenching in oil to harden is a common misconception that just seems to continue on, despite scientific proof of incomplete hardening in most testing. Steel reaches...

    Mountain man knife

I seriously doubt fake being that each blade is patterned differently and should be of a reasonably good quality considering the steels used in the making of it and the Rockwell hardness they claim. An accurate Rc hardness read is difficult to obtain with Damascus and varies from check point to...

Ok laugh now. I dont care i like it

You can do light work on occasion, but a drill press is NOT a milling machine, and not made with the intent to be a substitute for one. The side pressures will sooner or later wear your bearings out and then you will have neither.

    Frizzen hardening question

Kasenit was taken off the market quite a few years ago. A government overreach. The cyanide it contained was of no significant concern and to my knowledge no one was ever harmed by it, and it worked, although none of these quick case hardening compound processes will match real pack case...

    Frizzen hardening question

You were told wrong. Motor oil is one of the worst/poorest quenches one could use. It is made for lubrication and not heat treat quenching. It will impart absolutely no carbon of any significance into steel and its vapors are very toxic to breathe. Worst of all, it is a slow cooling quench and...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

Crazy Crow Brass Tacks, solid brass heads, steel shanks. Hard to make out here, not a solid half moon casting, but rather the heads are a thick concave brass stamping, I would assume, with the shank set and locked in the center. Bear in mind these are a few years old. I am pretty sure post 2000...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

Yesterday I went to my shop and dug out 3 tacks that were bought from Crazy Crow. 3/8" high dome, and 5/16, and 1/4. Ground part of them all with my belt grinder. Solid brass heads, steel shanks. I will try to get photos today. To be fair, I do not remember exactly when I bought them, and a...

She mentioned in another correspondence they are getting them out of India. India does a lot of brass work.

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

I believe those shanks are trimmed then peened setting them just below the surface as Chuck Burrows described to me. It would be difficult to break shanks evenly with the surface and they would have near zero holding ability, even in rawhide. The tack placements are remarkably neat on that one.

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

"From -> SJS (403580) Hello Wick, I do not have a date on anything that is out of stock, I would suggest checking in a few weeks or so and seeing if we have them back in stock. I checked on the heads of the brass tacks for you, they are in fact solid brass with a steel shank. Would you like me...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

I found needle nosed pliers worked well to bend the shanks if you annealed the shanks with a torch. torch them to red, let them cool.

"From -> SJS (403580) Hello Wick, I left you a voicemail regarding your online order. Unfortunately our inventory had not updated on our website at the time of your order. We are out of the 3/8" high dome brass tacks. We do have the 1/4" high dome tacks in stock. Please let me know if you would...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

Sounds reasonable to me. That would work very well. Not crazy at all, if one wanted a really authentic look. Silver braze might work also. Where did your solid brass dome steel shank tacks come from? Same place as mine?

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

I just put in an order to CRAZY CROW for 100 3/8" brass tacks. They were listed as being in stock so they should not take long to arrive. I will test them to see for all to know one way or the other if brass or not. We shall see. If they are brass for sure, I will send a sample to anyone who...
