    Thanks, I left out that I always left the plate a tad oversize, a few thousandths, then once the epoxy was well cured I CAREFULLY/GENTLY used files to make it all evenly fitted. At least as best as I could. Time consuming but worth the result.

    Epoxy to keep it in place while fitting to the dovetail, then drill and counter sink for screws. Go slow and keep side loads and heat to a minimum.

    Depends on the blade. Many today have cobalt steel, or high carbon edges bonded to a low carbon main body. If the blade is made all of high carbon, yes.

    The Curie point and non-magnetic point with simple steels is 1414°f and far too low for a good austenic solution. Especially, with hyper-eutectic, those above .8% carbon simple steels, such as 10xx types, your target heat should be in the range of 1475°f, but not much over. Hypo-eutectic steels...

    If the set is valuable, you probably won't be using them very much if at all, so clean the bores as best you can, grease them for protection, and just enjoy owning such.

    No sir! Not in steel spring making. Strong steel springs are made by heat treating alone. Any hammering beyond the required shaping, while red hot, would only add unwanted stress to the spring. Non-ferrous metals perhaps, but not steel of high carbon where strength and power is needed.

    May be low carbon and was casehardened too shallow to last long. Rehardening would be the first thing to try, but if it doesn't take, resoling is another option.

    If you would form a shoe of a piece of file steel or 1095 and harden it, you can solder it to the frizzen and temper it at the same time using 60/40 solder which melts and flows at around 360°/370°F.

    I broke my hickory RR on a hunting trip and had no replacement. The dowel I bought lasted 4 years of use before it broke and skewered my hand. I was just giving the history of why I had a common dowel as a ramrod and why such rods are not recommended to be used as such.

    My lantern caught fire because the candle had burned down to make a puddle with a wick in it. I caught it in time to save it. Charred some but still usable.
