    Renegade Hunter opinions?

I've had one for years but I only really spent a lot of time playing with it this year. I'm happy with it. I haven't worked on the trigger. Its definitely not as light as my guns with set triggers but its not bad at all. I've mentioned it here before but its hard for me to go back and forth...

    Retirement for an old hunter

That passage always stood out to me also. I've shared it on other forums. I don't know how many times I've read it. It definitely seems like a preferable way to live and spend your last days than what most of us will face. :thumb:

Plains Pistol Snowshoe Casting Over Fire

Its been a few years so I could be wrong but I don't think I cooked this hare in the woods. Every one I've cooked over fire has been very good.

    Problems with Flint & Steel

As others have mentioned, a quality striker makes a big difference. A sharp edge on the flint is also important. I enjoy collecting strikers. I've added a few strikers to my collection since this pic but here are some of my favorites. I picked up this titanium striker earlier this year. From...

    Problems with Flint & Steel

I can't begin to guess how many batches of char cloth I've made over the years and never plugged the hole. A small hole (small being the key) is not going to allow enough oxygen in to make a difference. A large hole might and opening the tin while the char is still hot will definitely ignite it...

    Problems with Flint & Steel

Sorry for so many posts. I love various methods of fire starting, especially flint and steel. :thumb: You can also use a magnifying glass with char cloth. Notice this char cloth isn't blackened all the way through. This is often some of the best char cloth since it can ignite without tinder...

    Problems with Flint & Steel

It only takes a small hole in the tin. If you use a hinged tin (like an Altoids tin) you don't have to add a hole. Too large a hole will allow more oxygen into the tin, increasing the chances of the cloth igniting. I've never plugged the hole on my tins when removing it from the heat. I do...

    Problems with Flint & Steel

Another thing I often do to keep my hands away from the heat is to use a couple pieces of bark to hold the tinder material. This works well with wood shavings and other materials that take longer to ignite. On this trip I was using inner aspen bark for tinder. Here are a couple strips of bark...

    Problems with Flint & Steel

Another flint and steel option. I only do this with an empty gun.

    Problems with Flint & Steel

Congrats on your first batch of char cloth! Whatever tinder you use, you want a decent amount of it. Grass tinder is often referred to as a birds nest. Whether using grass or wood shavings I form it into a birds nest shape, placing the char in the middle, then closing the nest over it. Having a...

Random photos of famous ML percussion/flint guns, or rather guns owned by either famous people or during famous events

Its interesting that in this picture of George Washington Sears (aka Nessmuk), he's not holding the Billinghurst at 60 round balls to a pound (around .42 cal) he wrote of. I don't remember him writing about this double at all.

Any Lyman Plains Pistol fans here?

I've been very happy with my Plains Pistol. Its the first kit gun I built. Its a .54 caliber. Its been very accurate with a .530" ball, .018" pillow ticking patch lubed with either Bumblin' Bear Grease or Trappers Pure Mink Oil over 25gr 3F Goex. I believe this was my first range trip and...

    Nothing!

Days when you don't take any game make the days when you do that much better. On another forum when I shared some grouse hunting pics a member said something like "I wish grouse hunting was that easy here." He doesn't realize how many miles I cover in rugged country for every bird I take. I also...

    Smoothbores....

I like both rifles and smoothbores. In that scenario, one thing I would consider would be the weight of the accoutrements. I can get by using a lot less lead with a rifle than with a smoothbore. When I compare my .62 smoothbore to my .54 rifle, I get one shot out of 1 oz of lead with the .62...
