    Exit wound on deer.

Born in S Sask, seen oodles of antelope, ate plenty and never shot one. Season coincides with goose/duck and as such have had them around me lots. Cousins shoot them with bows and muzzleloaders all the time. Same with mule deer, and I have taken lots of these with bow and muzzleloader. Neither...

    Renegade for elk hunting

My .54 Renegade barrel (.530rb, .018” tick patch and 60g Goex 2fg) vs the 20g drop in smooth bore barrel (.575rb, .025” tick patch and 60g Goex 2fg) I made for the same stock. I can tell you that according to the gongs on the trail walk, the .575 ball hits wayyy harder!! Walk

    Hanging deer with hide on.

I too believe in hanging an animal for a few days prior to cutting, as long as conditions allow for it. Conditions is a broad term ranging from temperature to appropriate ability and space. But I refuse to hang with hide on, due to my own reasons. Walk

    Hanging deer with hide on.

Been a long time that I’ve gone without a processor. Learned to cut meat from my ex-mother in law at age 17. I lived up North in them days and moose was the annual staple, plus a deer or two. Life threw a few lemons my way and I ended up in a small apartment in a larger town. Moose had been put...

58 Colonial and The Bull Elk

I’ve been involved in a lot of elk kills, and the first thing I tell folks is that an elk ain’t dead until it is dead!! Elk being down doesn’t mean its dead…yet. I’ve seen elk get up after being hit with a more than adequate modern cartridge, only to never be recovered. As you approach a downed...

    54 Caliber for Elk

I’ve only killed one with a .54 roundball and one with a .50 conical. All the others are with bow or centerfire. Yup, but the restriction on you is waiting on the perfect shot. Not forcing anything. Walk

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

Lol. I started with a .50 TC Hawken far to long ago. Sold it to my brother as I started to learn myself on what original rifles were actually like. This learning came from the old Muzzleloader Magazine Campfire forum long before it died. Bought a .54 Renegade and built a truer Plains rifle from...

    Hanging deer with hide on.

I’ve worked to get moose home, hung, skinned and quartered until 2 or 3am before food and a shower. You are one tired boy come morning, but it is nice to see those clean quarters of meat hanging, all cooling very well! Walk

    Hanging deer with hide on.

Hey folks, my girlfriend walked into the room where I was watching a show and the fellow was just hanging his gutted deer, hide on, and was saying that tomorrow he would skin and start the butchering job. She then immediately looked at me and said, “he’s not gonna skin it now?”. Not sure how to...

Iron vs Brass Furniture on Period Correct Rifles

Time period was all over the map. Just blanket statements made that removing the brass and replacing with steel makes them more period correct. One feller stated that his Hawken (TC) became period correct by getting rid of the brass. I chuckled. I believe the Hawken brothers did make iron...
