    Italian museum photo

Those are Japanese matchlocks known as teppō or tanegashima. The Japanese favored a snapping matchlock design based off a Malaccan design called an istinggar that the Portuguese brought from their colony in the Malay archipelago. Read "Tanegashima-The Arrival of Europe in Japan" by Olof G. Lidin...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Just went shooting at the range today. I brought my Harper's Ferry Pistol, Hawken and underhammer and shot them a bunch at different distances. I tried out my Harper's Ferry Pistol, and it worked well! I had some trouble with some flashes in the pan, but after I picked the touch hole and...

    Wheelock Lock From Scratch

I would love a wheelock! I assume he fabricated the lock himself, which is even beyond my understanding. Amazing work!

    Checking on a vendor

It's a scam. Why would they have black powder in stock as opposed to the legit vendors like Powder Inc and Buffalo Arms? Also, they take Bitcoin and Zelle, which are telltale signs of a scam.

    How did you get hooked?

I got into muzzleloading a couple months back. I am very interested in history (English Civil War, Revolutionary War, King Phillip's War, Golden Age of Piracy, etc). My affinity for history led me to getting interested in muzzleloading, and I picked up my Hawken for my birthday. A couple months...

Interested in getting into Muzzle loading and am looking to learn more.

Welcome from Texas! This is one of the best places on-line to learn about muzzleloading. I recommend that you read Ned Robert's book "The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle". It's one of the most comprehensive and interesting reads on muzzleloading IMO.

Pedersoli Harper's Ferry Pistol Wonky Lock Geometry.

Thanks for the advice guys, seems like this is common among these pistols. I'll try my luck but I'm not expecting miracles!

    St. Louis Hawken recoil

In my Hawken, I shoot 50 grains and it doesn't kick that bad. The curvature in the buttplate on my Hawken is just about the same as yours. FWIW, I personally shoot "across the body" as opposed to say a modern gun with a flat butt. I honestly have no idea on why it kicks so much. Maybe because...

    Parts search gone bad

I know how you feel. I looked online for a flash hider, full auto sear, bump stock, and high capacity magazines for my flinter. Seems like these vendors are all out of stock!

    Houston, we have a problem...

I use a wet lube that I apply when I'm cutting a patch. The wet lube I use is a 1:1:1 solution of Murphy's Oil Soap, Denatured Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide. Fouling isn't really an issue when I use this wet lube.

Really? I never knew that! I've always just screwed it and pulled it out o_O .

    how to pull a ball

They don't call me "King Dryballer" for no reason! One thing that you can do, is to use a ball puller. Screw the ball puller in (not too much or else the ball will expand) and pull that sucker out of there! If you're using a flinter, you can put a small amount powder near the touch hole and you...
