What do you call this part?

There is a strong metal piece let into the end of my stock that the breech hook latches into. What's it called?

    Should I bed my barrel?

I know the accuracy is more affected by those factors you mentioned, but just knowing that the voids exist under the barrel bugs me. That's really the only reason I'm going to bed the barrel. It really appreciate all of y'alls suggestions. I read an article by an FRP specialist, and he talked...

    Should I bed my barrel?

I've been thinking about using Saran wrap, very carefully and wrinkle free applied to the barrel as a parting agent. What slightly terrifies me is what if the Saran wrap gets torn a bit while I'm laying the barrel down. That would result in the barrel being permanently glued to the stock. I can...

    Should I bed my barrel?

You guys who bed your barrels with epoxy, I assume it's thickened epoxy. Please answer me this: do you use a release agent on the barrel to prevent the epoxy from sticking? I have a lot of experience with epoxy, and I assume I will use plain one to one epoxy thickened with Cab-O-Sil. I think I...

My custom California copper ML bullet.

    1. Because I am not just like everybody else. 2. If you buy me a 59 caliber custom mold and a pound of bismuth, then I'll do it your way. Until then, I'm doing it my own hayseed homegrown way, and I'll report the results with a video of the first shot of a 15 mm by 11/16 in long cylindrical...

My custom California copper ML bullet.

I found 15 mm copper balls for sale from some foreign company that specializes in spherical objects of all kinds. The price for one 15 mm round copper ball, according to this company, is just about exactly $30. For just one. AACK! I think I'll go for the 15 mm brass balls, and shoot two at once...

    Should I bed my barrel?

    Lololol!!!

    Should I bed my barrel?

I know it's not traditional, but I'm sure those old timers made their stocks fit their barrels very closely. The breech end of my barrel has over a 1 16th inch gap between the bottom flat of the octagon barrel and the stock. I wonder if those gaps between the barrel and the stock affect accuracy...

Interesting formula for weight of a round ball.

Instead of going through all the algebra and conversions to figure the weight of a specific size pure lead round ball, you can use a constant x diameter cubed. So, a 395 caliber lead ball weight equals the constant 1502.6 x .395 x .395 x ..395 = 92.6 grains. Much easier. I thought this might be...

My custom California copper ML bullet.

Wadcutters make nice round holes in cardboard targets. I saw MythBusters try to cut a rope in half with a bullet but couldn't do it. Then I saw a cowboy shooter demonstrate it by using a partial partially conical bullet just like the one you show in the picture, and it cut the rope very well.

My custom California copper ML bullet.

Are you talking about copper jacketed lead bullets? Those are illegal in California because they fragment inside the animal and spray shards of lead. The local gun shop gave me a 50 caliber machine gun bullet for free, and it's completely shrouded in copper, but the owner told me it would be...

My custom California copper ML bullet.

You guys, I looked hard for 15 mm copper rod, but it never occurred to me to look for copper or brass 15 mm balls! (I don't have anything with a 5/8 or 3/4 chuck to spin it with.)

    Accuracy of my Hawken rifle

IMO that's a good group at 100 yards too. Great shooting, beautiful rifle.

My custom California copper ML bullet.

More on this Kalifornia-correct copper bullet I'm designing for my .6115 caliber muzzleloader. The the 15 mm pure copper rod will fit snugly in my bore with a one 1000 inch patch. But I did the math, and only one inch of 15 mm diameter copper cylinder weighs 625 grains which is too heavy. But a...

    It's not a group...it's so bad it's not even a shotgun pattern....I need help.

I don't know the history of your rifle, and I don't want to talk down to you, but could there be cosmoline in the barrel? It takes quite an effort to remove it completely, and it would really screw up your shooting if any is in there. In addition I have a simple suggestion: use a larger load of...

Hunting in California the snti-lead state.o

That gets me to thinking. If you kill off all the insects, which are a major part of a pheasants diet, they might not be able to survive very well in that area. A practical example is if you have moles in your lawn, drench it with pesticide, it'll kill off the insects and worms and the moles...

What is this muzzleloader part called?

Yes if you know what you're doing. Now that I've soldered it, I learned on my own essentially what you said. Next time I plan to tin several spots on the rib and the barrel, then flatten out a piece of 35/75 rosin core solder to about a little less than 1/16 of an inch, slice it into appropriate...

What is this muzzleloader part called?

By the way, I modified the picture to make it show the parts more plainly, which also made the barrel look like it's totally rusty. It's not, but it does need refinishing.
