    Help me spend my money

I think you maade the right choice. I had one for years and never had a problem (except once a year nor so when I put it all disassembled into the dishwasher for a seriously deep cleaning. Wife objected.)

    What are your favorite targets?

I have made and designed quite a few metal targets over the years, and I follow the rule that the target has to move (a lot) when hit, or it has to make noise that can be heard by the shooter. Too many steel targets are far too heavy to move when hit by medium to small calibre balls, and those...

    carry case for revolver

My range box is a plastic 2-tray tool box with a lower compartment about 5" deep. I cut a piece of 2" ethafoam to fit in the bottom, and cut out traced-on silhouettes of my 2 pistols. I transport the pistols nested there under a plexiglass cover that allows me to use the space for other gear...

Where to start working up a load?

I shot a ruger OA for several years. Most accurate load was about 15 grFFFg., i would suggest about 10 would be sufficient to bag squirrels. When loading short, make sure the cylinder is full with inert filler (I used corn meal) over the powder enough so that the ball loads just level with...

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

Use water-based lube. Your barrel then gets swabbed as you load every shot, and the crud gets shot away with the patch.

Noisy shooting - just for the hell of it!

I had the same experience years ago on New Year's eve. At a friend's house on one of the Gulf Islands, we loaded up my little cannon (2.5" bore) with about 300 gr of powder, then rammed a bore-size wad of damp newspaper about 3" deep hard down onto it. Near midnight, it sounded like a war in...

    Swabbing between shot for safety.

With our group, when a 'new' shooter shows up, the rangemaster keeps a pretty close eye on him until he is sure that the newbie knows what he/she is doing, and if they seem to be a bit shaky, he'll match them up with an experienced person who can mentor and help until everyone is comfortable...

    Swabbing between shot for safety.

I suspect that bits of the cartridge paper left behind could have been the cause also. Like everyone else on this platform, in 40 years fo bp shooting, I have never seen/heard of, a DOCUMENTED instance of it happening. Much of the folklore about the exaggerated dangers of bp is passed on by...

    Bullet size for 50 cal

I tried some .457 405gr. 45-70 bullets out of my .50 TC. put them down with a patch, just like loading rb. 60grFF sent them downrange; hit 100 yd. 12'' gong repeatedly. My intention was to use them bear hunting, but never got the chance. The TC MAXI bullets should work well for you; that's...

Questions for the guys that can "shoot all day" without swabbing

I got over the oily/greased patch thing early on because of fouling forming after only a few shots. For range shooting, I only use a libe consisting of a shot of dish detergent down the inside of a pill bottle full of cut patches, then I fill the bottle with water and squeeze the column of...

Suddenly started getting pan flash ?

I agree. That is why I use water based lube for range shooting; the fouling gets wiped with every load, and a ring never develops. When I (briefly) used greasy or oiled patches, The guns 'ringed up' after only a few shots and it became very difficult to fully seat a ball. If that does happen...

How do I prevent carbon ring under nipple?

Sounds to me like you are worrying about a normal event. There is always (in my experience) a ring of residue at the face of the nipple, and it shouldn't affect anything. It's probably due to a tiny back-eddy around the spark that allows fouling to collect there. I'd look for some other cause...

    Shot in a .58?

Think of your column of shot spinning out of the barrel; it will immediately start to disperse in a circle as it hurtles through space, just like our universe. Think 'Big Bang Theory' in miniature.

Smoothbore gurus.......I need a little help with a roundball load

I use a patched ball; no cards, wads, or any other unneccessary stuff. You need to lower the back of the gun, or see more front sight (or barrel) to get the shot higher; at 25 yd., adding more powder won't raise the hit significantly. Shooting a smoothie is like shooting a bare bow; lots of...

    SPLIT THE BALL TARGET QUESTION

We have a wire clip on the back of the axe head that holds a 3x5" index card. Even if the tiniest shaving is cut off the ball, it will show on the card, but might miss or not break, a clay.

I made a noobie mistake on cleaning rod -- Range rod for PA long gun

I have used nothing but wooden rods for 35 years for loading and cleaning. The only times my steel rods come out is when I am forced to use a ball screw, or to help someone with a problem (stuck ball due to fouling) I get my rr blanks from the hardware store; every time I pass the dowelling...

    Lead too hot?

I agree that the mold is too cool. I would think that a long block like that could be cooler on one end, so some cavities would be ok, but others not. Always be sure to stir your flux right into the molten lead; it's sometime surprising how much crud emerges.
