    A little bonjour from Normandy-France

It probably is, but so far I haven't been able to make/buy ammo for it.

Making a new ramrod - questions

AS RKG1 mentioned, I always 'temper' my wooden rods by storing my next blank in a pipe filled with kerosene. I buy dowelling at HD, and select the sticks with little or no 'run out' in the grain. I use them exclusively for loading, and have done so for about 35 years. Never broke one except...

Questions for the guys that can "shoot all day" without swabbing

This has been massaged a thousand times. My 30 years' experience has taught me: use a water-based lube if doing a lot of shooting in a day. The bore gets swabbed clean with each new shot as it is loaded. I use just water with a good squirt of dish detergent added. I stack pre-cut patches...

New Muzzleloader Shooter Hold Over Question

You can easily raise the back sight by attaching a new, higher, blade to the back of the existing sight, then file/grind it down to the height you require. You can attach with solder or epoxy(more temporary because easily removed). If you are welder, you could weld a bit more on to the top of...

Bend the hammer or set back the barrel ?

Don't count on TC stuff not being hardened. Get it cherry red to bend. 'bin dere; done dat.

How do you load your muzzleloader?

I always load holding the rifle vertically with my left hand resting the butt on my left instep. I hold the end of the barrel with fingers3-5, which allows me to hold the powder measure. My patches, horn, etc. are easily reached with my free right hand while still supporting the rifle...

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

Why not? I am sure at least one fellow did it. I have seen one done by winding a long strip of heavy wet paper spirally, and scorching with a torch. I put stripes on most of mine. Whatever suits you.

    casting wrinkly balls

When I cast Minies, I kept the mold super hot or the skirts were often incomplete. Also, be sure to leave a large puddle on the sprue cutter. If you don't, the cooling lead will contract ans suck a bubble of air down into the bullet. It's very hard to see the tiny air channel in the cut-off...

    casting wrinkly balls

I did the same with most of mine. I use a wooden dowel instead of a hammer to strike the cutters; softer blow and less likely to damage the molds.

REPAIR on RIFLING - old original austrian Jaeger rifle

same in English. By the way, I'd shoot it and see how it does before doing anythig about the pits. Beautiful old rifle.

    Shooting all by one’s lonesome

I only shoot alone when I am doing serious target work. The rest of the time I shoot with my club or at r'voos.

    Strange issue cleaning .50 cal

When I have had threads break off of a jag, I chuck the jag up in my lathe and drill/tap a hole with appropriate thread, and insert a steel screw with the head cut off, with some loctite to prevent the rod from unscrewing while in use.

So Re: cleaning - Does anyone use an ultrasonic for handgun cleaning?

I used to disassemble and chuck into the dishwasher for super cleaning a couple of times a year.

Mountain Men movie Short muzzle loaders?

I'm not sure what she has planned. The gun appears to be on half ****, and her finger isn't ready on the trigger.

    Long rifle ramrod length?

always. I like about 1-2 inches out there. Gives a good grab, and potentially keeps the muzzle from getting inadvertantly plugged up. Besides, if I break the end off somehow, I can just re-fit the brass on the slightly shorter rod.

Screw barrel pistols as a finishing shot?

I have a .36 screw barrel. The chamber only holds about 5-10 gr of powder; If I for some reson want more poke, I muzzle load it with a bit more. I'd be more tempted to go with a small revolver for a quick follow-up if needed. Or a ball peen hammer (they never misfire.)

Shot the Philly Derringer today to check penetration.

We sometimes have derringer shoots at rendezvous. Usually set up with a card table with a cut-out plywood 'gambler ' (Black Bart) opposite. the shooter. You sat with cards in your shooting hand, loaded but not cocked derringer on the table in front of you. The shooter is required to call out...

Round ball patch size and accuracy

I punch my patches. 1" for .40-.50, 1.25" for .54-62. Could it be that your lube is gluing the patch to the balls for a split second? That might influence the accuracy. Your spit may not be wet enough? I'd try some soapy water lube: soak the day's patches in a soapy solution. Prior to...

    Muzzle filing to adjust POI

Your sights are set to account for the gravitational pull on the ball from a vertically held gun. if you turn the gun on its side, the correction no longer works, and you will shoot low and to one side or the other (depending on which way you rotate the gun)
