    Hunting In Cold Weather?

Depends a lot on the humidity in the building. If you bring in a metal object, and dew condenses on it, keep the gun outside or in an unheated porch. If your powder has any exposure to the warm air, it will gather some moisture via the flash hole or open nipple; hard to say if enough to...

Ask help to cast my first round balls

The fingernail test is good to see if you have soft lead. I have shot everyting from marbles to ball bearings out of my rifle. They all shoot ok, just a bit higher or lower at 100 yd. I have found no practical difference shooting gooey roofer's lead or pure wheel weights. Perhaps a super...

Ask help to cast my first round balls

No need for any kind of special pot. I used a small ss kitchen pot for years, and dipped lead with a bent-up tablespoon. You will need some sort of flux to clean your lead when it melts. I use bits of paraffin (candles) or beeswax, or one of the commercial fluxes available. (melt the lead...

    Cheating In Matches

I am always careful. In the case of frequently suspected folks, I simply asked if a couple of less experienced shooters could join them so that expert help would be present if something went South. Nobody got called down, and the noobies wern't told to 'keep an eye on them' . Nobody got p'd...

    Cheating In Matches

Me too. We generally make it a 'rule' that the shooter has no say in whether or not he/she scored a hit. It should be the consensus of the group. We had spme 'old buddies' who always shot together, and it was curious how much better they scored when nobody else was with them. When I was...

Just a great toy. Fun at New Years'. Gets a lot of attention at trap shoots (but don't expect to get a lot). OF course, if you have a pirate ship, there could be a lot of uses for it.

My new smoothie is muzzle heavy … any ideas?

If you fill the balls with water, they will often leave a tracer-like trail. I shoot them from my little cannon +- 600 yards.

This is what mine does for ball of fire. 60grFF. 12 guage with RB. Always a crowd pleaser on the trap range, but ya gotta get them quick! For just making noise, I double the powder and pack it down hard. No need for a wad on top; the flash will light up a significant part of your...

    How wet is wet?

I use a detergent/water lube. I place stacks of pre-punched patches in a prescription bottle, squirt a bit of detergent in and fill the bottle with water, squeezing the stack as I fill to work out all the air and distribute the soap. When it's range time, I remove however many patches (still...

Wet BP Can it be used?

Incorrect re: heat. It needs a spark or flame to ignite. Indirect heat does not set it off. I have seen full cans of powder with half of the labels burned off in a house fire that did not ignite. Putting the lead balls in a can and shaking it up is a good idea.

    Cleaning Brass Furniture

I have used a product called 'Nevr Dull'. It's cotton tow with some sort of chemical. Works on just about any tarnish. I only polish brass on my new builds (show-off), then let them aquire whatever patina they can. I never try to 'age' them; to my eye it always looks phoney (too uniform).

    Cleaning

I pump water through nipple/ flash hole several times to flush them out before removing them to finish cleaning the bore. I usually wrap a piece of teflon thread seal on before re-installing.

Brass or steel punches to remove pins from trade gun

I made punches simply by grinding the points off of suitably sized nails. No need to buy sspecial punches; the pins usually just slide out the VERY rare times when they must be removed.

Corn meal - At our last muzzle loading trap shoot one said he was using corn meal instead of cushion wads. It seemed to work.

If everything is packed down in order, nothing will move around. If you are worried, put a paper disc down to separate the powder and cornmeal. One thing I found is that you must use the lightest card you can get away with over the shot; a heavy card will create a 'donut' pattern, as the shot...

    Tiller length..?

I read somewhere that they put the gonne on the end of pikestaffs, and after they had fired their shot, they became pikemen, thus the long shafts. They would have mostly been quite close to the enemy, and probably wouldn't get a chance to reload before the lines came together, after which I...

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

You can certainly do that if things get crudded up. Using a water-based lube prevents having to do it. I prefer to not mess around over an almost-loaded gun.
