    Record cap price

The one in my hand is 50# at 28", the one on the tree was just beginning tillering process so hadn't been strung yet. It was going to be a bow from a hickory limb, but unfortunately had too many knots in it and beyond my knowledge of how to tiller it properly so it broke in the process.

Flintlocks are more fun anyway and you can make your own archery equipment as well. A traditional homemade bow is more fun to shoot as well... I just started making my own bows, which is a lot of fun as well.

Don’t underestimate a small charge of black powder

There is no doubt about that. When I've pushed a ball without powder I have to trickle powder into the flash hole to remove it. Maybe get a couple grains in and it throws the ball out at I would guess about 400 ft/sec. You can see it but wouldn't want to get hit by it! My estimation comes...

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

How the heck do you season a cast iron pan without oil???

Lions mane mushroom/ chicken of the woods

I've grown lion's mane and it is delicious, can be cooked many ways. Never have seen it in the wild here. It was a great fall for hen's here, I have about 2 lbs of dried hen's and another 15 or so frozen. Many uses for hen's as well, I like to give them an egg wash and lightly dust with...

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Curious on what the peroxide does for this recipe. Peroxide is an oxidizer and will react with the soap, so the peroxide would have to cause some type of beneficial reaction to the mixture for it to be beneficial. Possibilities, acetone, ketones, formaldehyde among others.

How do you clean your rifled barrel?

Same way I clean a modern weapon. Not a fan of intentionally putting water down a barrel, even though that's the way they've done it for hundreds of years. But they did not have access to the solvents and protective agents we have now and if they did, I'm pretty sure they would use them...

    Wet aging game meat

I'm going to try the wet aging process as described this year. I generally hang for up to 2 weeks if temps allow and then butcher and vac pack, if I remember ahead of time, I let thaw in fridge and sit for a week or so to age more. I've also had good luck with the dry aging bags, although I've...

    Cleaning

I'm a rebel when it comes to cleaning my flintlocks and never use water. I use a gun cleaning solvent and protectant and clean it like any other gun, although I do use a scraper for breech plug. The reason they used water is because they didn't have the wonderful gun cleaning solvents we do...

    Bear Oil

Did my first batch today, rendered a 1 gallon ziplock bag down and got almost 3 quarts from it. Looks like nice stuff, beautiful golden color and has a great flavor! The cracklings with some cajun seasoning salt is excellent as well...

    .62 Smoothbore Flintlock Grouse Hunt

Very interesting indeed! We can only use birdshot for,,,, well, birds. And those darn ruffed grouse are tough enough to hit on the fly with shot much less a ball!

    Bear Oil

I'm going to be doing some rendering from my bear, probably next week. I have about 30 lbs that I took from it, although I'm sure it had over 100 lbs. I just don't need that much so I gave it to whoever wanted it and tossed the rest for nature to take care of. I'm sure I will give a lot of...

    Bear Hunt

Thanks guys, it was a fun hunt from start to finish. Kind of an interesting ending although wish it would have gone a little different. After the shot it ran off about 20 yards and then over an hour slowly moved off and bedded about 40 yards from my tree. I stayed in the stand for over 2...

    Bear Hunt

Well, it took 6 days in the stand in northern Wisconsin but finally got my bear! Saw a small one first day that I let go and another later that day that I would have taken but wouldn't give me a good shot, so didn't push it. This one came on to the bait the last day of my hunt, 383# sow without...

    Bear Hunt

Thanks! Should be a fun time, all packed up and ready to roll in the morning. I will report back after the hunt. 4 guys with tags so should be fun. Probably have some bear grease to spare if anyone is interested. I could probably get as much as I wanted, or process.

    Bear Hunt

Heading up north for a bear hunt with the smoothbore 20ga tomorrow, throw in some sturgeon and other fishing as well. Should be a fun 10 or so days away from it all and hopefully first big game taken with a flintlock!

    Let me see those smoothies

Interesting. Ornate box turtles are protected in Wisconsin, but painters are not. Probably would not have the same sound as a box though and wouldn't be a box turkey call...
