Let me see those smoothies

Last year I completed a reproduction of a Hewes and Phillips conversion of an M1840 to percussion smoothbore. I used an Armisport M1842 as the basis for the conversion. It is an example of the only US-produced smoothbore muskets that had a rear sight. The rear sight was added during the conversion from flintlock to percussion in anticipation of rifling the guns. But they were needed so quickly they were sent out without being rifled.

Plain maple blank, 38" Colerain 62 cal "turkey choke", fusil buttplate, English trigger guard, single trigger. The lock will be either L&R classic or large Siler flint.

I bought a kit once, said for the experienced builder. Still working on it, it was twenty pounds of pig iron and brass, and a bag of maple seeds

Here are my two smoothies.......Older Japan made DGW repro of 1766 Charleville, cut down to 31" barrel,
along with repro 1777 Charleville pistol. Both .69 cal.

Beware box turtle calls, they are illegal everywhere with stiff penalties for being caught with one. I only use mine on private property with locked gates behind me and about the same chance of seeing a game warden as finding a herd of unicorns on the property.

The thinking is; if they were legal the dum-dums would be killing protected live box turtles to make box calls and I suspect they would be.

Through the years I have found numerous empty weathered box turtle shells while hunting, a few of which I turned into box calls. They sound great by the way.

I used to shoot only rifles. Then I got a smoothie…and then another one, and another. Percussion or flint, I love ‘em.
They are no different than any other gun. You have to take the time to learn what they like in order for them to shoot well. But then they are a friend for life. I worked up both shot and round ball loads for all of mine.

In the last few years all I use is my smoothbore. I can hear my rifle in the closet screaming hey! Remember me?!?!

Interesting. Ornate box turtles are protected in Wisconsin, but painters are not. Probably would not have the same sound as a box though and wouldn't be a box turkey call...

My Pedersoli 20ga/62 cal "fowler". 'Shoots a nasty load out to 35-40 yards. Thanks to Mike Beliveau for the great advice on working up a load.
