How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

I love bluegrass and blues as well. In fact, my favorite instrument to play is my 5-string banjo. And I'll bet you have Eric Clapton and BB Kings "Ridin with the King" CD.

How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

Then I find myself going back the next day or two and running a patch through it to make sure no rust. No wonder my wife thinks I'm more in love with my guns than her.

How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

Maybe that's it, I'm usually listening to good old classic rock and roll while doing it. A lot of it could also be, "Now where did I set the nipple wrench?"

Come to think of it, the "putting away" portion does takes time.

How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

While typing my last post, the thought came to mind of a guy in one of the mountain man groups I belonged to several years ago. When we showed up to a shoot, he would take a rod with a wire brush attached and run it through his bore a couple time. He would then turn the gun upside down and tap...

How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

Seems like that's what I used to spend. By the way, I soak my spent BP cases in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water for about 7-8 minutes ( Under 10 as too long and they will start to etch) and they clean up nicely after that. I wipe the insides out with paper towel and take a piece of fine...

How long do you spend cleaning your long rifle after an outing at the range

Maybe I'm getting slow in my old age, but seems like it takes longer and longer for me to clean my BP guns when I get back from shooting. Last time I was the better part of an hour - and that was only one rifle. Is this the norm, or am I just too slow and meticulous?

    Made a ram rod

I ordered a replacement ramrod from TOTW and received it yesterday. I got the one with the iron tip, but I never noticed if it was pinned. I'll have to check it tonight. I had to do a bit of sanding on it to get it to fit in the ramrod channel, but after staining it, looks really nice.

Orange would be nice, then other hunters would see you and not shoot you. 🤪

At What Range Have Most of Your Big Game Animals Been Shot At?

With any iron sighted gun (including non muzzle loaders as well). I try to keep my shots under 100 yards. Out west where I live, 3 to 400 yard shots are there, but I pass on those. Stalking game in the thicker trees and brush with a short range muzzleloader etc. is where the fun is for me.

Bill to ban Lead Ammunition in Maine

Not sure if it can be cast or not, but it would cost you $10 a shot!!!

Bill to ban Lead Ammunition in Maine

I'm with others on the forum, I think I'd just shoot lead and take my chances.

    Alternate patchbox use

Might score a few points with her in the old gun department.

    Track of the wolf

I still haven't heard from TOTW that my order of last week is being processed or sent. Not sure who the carrier will be.

    Track of the wolf

Pretty much my latest experience. I bought a gun from a forum member and he shipped and paid for 2 day express. I got it 8 days later.

    First Muzzle loader hunt

During my Sophomore year in high school (1973) I purchased a .45 caliber Dixie flintlock long rifle kit. It had a two piece stock, but it was all I could afford at the time. With the help of a neighbor and his shop tools, we threw it together quickly and it looked like it too, but it shot pretty...

    Need help procuring powder

I don't know where in that area to get any, but I have one suggestion that may make things easier. I've used a lot of 3F for priming powder and really haven't noticed any difference between it and 4F. So if all you are able to find is 3F, I think you'd be OK.

    Black Powder

Likewise, I week or so ago, a friend of mine at work brought me in a full can of Elephant FFFG, two tins of #11 CCI caps along with a straight line capper and a hickory ball starter. It belonged to his grandpa and he didn't have any use for it either. Elephant powder is not my favorite, but hey...

    What did you do today

Started browning a gun barrel I’d stripped the blue off of. After one coat, I realized I needed more solution. Made an order to TOTW and added a few flints until the shipping amount changed, then backed off one.

    Black Powder

Even a better substitute for clay pigeons! Except you have to watch for the BB bounce back. 🤣
