Just a simple old rifle.....Plenty of inspiration

That's a really neat rifle. Where did you find it? I really like the triggers. They are well constructed. Overall it is a very nice Southern rifle.

Lyman Plains Rifle -A stuck ball and grease

How many ways can you have a stuck or dry ball without it bein run of the mill???

Lyman Plains Rifle -A stuck ball and grease

Never needed to put the screw completely through the ball to pull it. If you dont sufficiently get enough threads into the ball well sure it will strip out. It's not that complicated. It's the way folks been doin it since muzzleloading began I suppose. Here's a tip, spray some Balistol or other...

How tight to patch a ball

    Interesting !

Lyman Plains Rifle -A stuck ball and grease

Why aren't ball pullers used more frequently. If I have a loaded rifle that has been fired when I'm out hunting I always pull the ball and clean the rifle when I get home. Always works. No problems. I just throw the ball in a jar to be melted down next time. I can't understand all of these...

    Woodsrunner and Colonial

I wasn't necessarily talking about physical balance. I meant does it look unbalanced like the barrel is too short for the rifle.

    Yes. Helps alot. Thank you.

    Woodsrunner and Colonial

Thanks Jamie. That's what I'm looking for. I'm kinda partial to the flat butt on the colonial. The trigger guards appear to be the same. Are they?? In your photo the rifles appear to be roughly the same length. I thought there was about a five inch difference. Am I mistaken? Thanks, Jim

    Woodsrunner and Colonial

Can anyone post a photo of these two rifle profiles side by side? I really like the comb on the woodsrunner but I'm not sold on the 39 inch barrel. I understand folks like the shorter barrel for being somewhat more handy but I personally prefer a 42" plus barrel. Anyhow, does anyone feel the...

    Flint knapping hammer ?

You are one hundred percent correct. I just get to shooting and fix as needed. Wrong thinkin I know but I'm talking shooting targets out behind my house. If I ever shot in a match I would prolly be a little more proactive.

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Is it just me or anyone else feel the only time I need to knap a flint is during target shooting and the rifle is loaded and fails to spark. I keep the rifle in a safe direction, close the frizzen over the prime , use my left hand to hold the frizzen closed for a bit of safety and strike along...
