    Underhammer Actions?

The Billinghurst from any of these sources have a .75" diameter hole in the action/frame. It's also made specifically for 1.25-1.5" barrels. to make it look right, with smaller barrels, there will need to be some reworking. I'm making one now to fit a 1"barrel. I cut through the frame at the...

Boring out 50 cal Traditions Deerhunter to 54 cal? Smooth or rifled?

My Miss Muley wears a change barrel that was a rusted .50 cal they reamed to .54. That's the way it was, when I found it in the gun shop! they had taken it in as a trade.. and the working 'smith" got the itch to ream it until he hit smooth metal.. stopped a 0.54.. works well and has plenty of...

    stop brass from tarnishing

There is a product called NevR Dull.. comes in a can and I get mine at the hardware store. Tear of a small chunk of the cleaner impregnated fiber and rub the brass with that.. it'll turn a smeary black for a bit and then the brass will ( as my bud says ) shine like a diamond in a Goat's butt...

Turned both cherries by hand on my lathe. hand filed the teeth and Kasenite hardened them. The mould blanks were faced aluminum blocks...

    Ferguson breech threads.

I had worked up a gear set to try it on my lathe, but haven't had the time to cut gears or get someone with a 3D printer to make a set .. and the lead screw one is gonna end up a special made and have only one specific purpose...

    Ferguson breech threads.

anyway I look at it, my lil lathe won't cut that pitch :( unless I do some fancy gear switching out on the banjo.. and then I'd probably have to hand crank it?? cuz I'm not sure at it's slowest speed I could keep up with the carriage traveling that fast .. Respect Always Metalshaper/Jonathan

    Ferguson breech threads.

Think the originals were 11, but my mind "thinks" I remember the replicas being made with a 1 pitch 10 start thread? but then again its been said I have lost my mind!! Respect Always Metalshaper/Jonathan

    Poured pewter nose cap..?

IF and I repeat IF you are handy with a pencil style soldering iron.. you can 'sometimes' repair a pewter ****oo by flowing a bit into the void. but you have to be very careful you don't overheat things and cause more problems!!! I think, the conventional theory, would be to melt it off and...

    24 gauge smooth rifle

That will get you started and pattern it, of course! ;) but you should be able to see if you need to play a bit more to tweak the load some? Respect Always Metalshaper/Jonathan

    Underhammer Action Kit

I've thought about doing a severe mod to the action.. Basically building it to work like one of my locks :thumb: Still, looking back it has potential?? The first thing I'd do is anneal all of the frame parts and take any stresses out of the parts..This would allow me to nudge some of the...

    Underhammer Action Kit

if this is Kit the Billinghurst style of underhammer?? Be prepared to deal with a lot of misalignment and twist in the cast parts! I'm dealing with a kit now ( was given to me ) that the lower tang is as much as 1/4" off from the upper tang and both have twist.. Just what I have discovered...

I want to build an underhammer

The Billinghurst action described, was designed for 1.25-1.5" barrels, so take that into consideration. I'm working on one now, that will wear a 1" acf at the breech barrel. I've cut and lowered the top/tang to match closer to the barrel's top flat... currently working to machine and dress the...

I want to build an underhammer

OK here is the basics of a Hilliard, not much simpler than this! There is a book on underhammers, by Jeff Baron.. simple but all you'd need to know to build one. The other pic is my Rifle.. Respect Always Metalshaper/Jonathan

    English Breech plug

anyone got a spare English 'flat bottom' breech plug laying about? I could use some pics of it if so! one shot straight at the plug's face.. then the normal side, top and bottom views.. It seems they are scarce right now and I do own a lil lathe and a bench top mill? Respect Always...
