    Devolving a load

So this bulk patching that I am going to buy and cut... Do I cut it into rounds, Squares, Or crosses? The prelubed patches are round, but that leaves lots of short strings to fray off. Still round ball & round patch makes sense. Squares is easy and leaves long warf and warp threads but would...

What group size makes you happy?

This topic is spot on for me. Blackpowder is getting me back into firearms bafter a long hiatus, and my skills in general have deteriorated immensely. Now I have to readjust my goals and expectations. Seeing what you can do will help me to set realistic goalposts. Thanks all.

    Devolving a load

Mine too! I figured it was my fault. Loading too abruptly, or not using the short starter right. My first 2 buys were OK, just this last batch that sucked. Again, I just thought that the first two were a more forgiving weave.

    Devolving a load

What I have is a .50 cal Traditions 1:66 twist 33.5" barrel. What I have been using is a 0.018 patch prelubed patch ( package marked 0.015 but mics out to 0.018) with a 0.490 ball over 70 gr of 3F. It is just in the past month that I have been able to spend any real range time with this...

    Devolving a load

Great advice, thanks! But crap, I thought I was eliminating one variable by going with prelubed patches. I figured that they would offer more consistency patch to patch and lot to lot than anything I cook up at home.

Spit patching while wearing a mask

With such low morbidity and mortality rates in my age group, I can't say that I am afraid. I will however continue to wear a mask when out in public. There is a reason that some people are calling it "Boomer Doomer".

    Ballistol as a Lubricant

I think I’m going to search or start a new thread on barrel protectants but here is a good comparison video off the You Tubes. It even includes tat brand available at Canada Tire. Unfortunately it only Compares commercially available penetrating oils, and dose not talk about how they are on...

Spit patching while wearing a mask

Likely for the safety of others that he will be in close proximity to. Even though most range shooting is done at appropriate social distancing spacing, you inevitably end up chatting with someone or several someones. Masks lower the chance of you (a possible asymptomatic carrier)...

    Pandemic lube

Many lube and cleaner recipes have rubbing alcohol in them. Unfortunately people are panicking in the US and stores do not have rubbing alcohol in them. Where I live, I can't even buy liqueur as vodka or Everclear could fill in. What I can buy is Denatured Alcohol, at the hardware store. It...

    Powder Measure

I think this is what Notchy Bob was talking about.

    Devolving a load

I do have thoughts of keeping it a hunting viable load. I think that 70 gr is good enough for deer and maybe hogs (the 45-70 worked right?) but maybe 60 gr would be powerful enough too. For powder, I am fairly confident that I won’t change from GoEx 3F. Readily available (for BP), and works...

    Devolving a load

So I am trying to find the best load for my Gun. I have got: 2 ball sizes (0.490 & 0.495) 2 patch thicknesses (0.010 & 0.015) And I know that I want the charge somewhere between 70 & 100 gr and I only use 5 gr increments. That is 28 permutations. Patch lube is the same, and using the...

I was going to say: Go to your bathroom. Look in the mirror. There, you found one.

54 Cal Lyman GPR RB deer performance

Maybe explain to the doubters that if people reliably take deer with traditional bows, than a large bore muzzleloader will do just fine. There is a reason (many really) why professional hunters and survivalists took up guns rather than staying with bows and arrows. Range really isn't a factor...

    TARGET IDEA

Cool idea! I may try it too, but in my household we don't use many of those snack cups. I have seen smaller ones at GFS, and other restaurant supply stores. What about other non-Newtonian fluids like oobleck? Oobleck may be cheaper than jello.

    Cherokee or Senena

I noticed that on yours, it does add to the overall good looks. I don't think I have ever had the lock off of ours, so I don't know if there is a mechanical reason to index the bushing.

    BP revolver range pistol box

Thank you for the included drawings. I don't have any pistols that ican mention here, but I would like to make a nice range box for my BP rifle equipment.

    Cherokee or Senena

Thank you! I have never done this before so any tips are appreciated. I do have anti -sieze in my garage from when I was working on vintage motor bikes.

Suggestions for using deer skin rawhide

Possibilities are endless, but I first I would think of a gun sock/case. Maybe a haversack? Anything with large pannels would show off the hide well. In S. America they use rawhide to make slot of horse tack, including saddles, reins, and chaps. Rawhide, once broken in can be fairly pliable.

    Cherokee or Senena

So I have the nipples ordered (ordered a spare too) but the wrench they recommend is not in stock. Will another wrench for a #11 nipple work?
