Why is it necessary to swab the bore with a cannon but not a musket?

I shoot in a relatively low humidity area so shooting a 30 round trail followed by a Fort Shoot of 25/30 no need to swab a barrel except to clean if I would desire to. That’s a great advantage in low humidity. But thank you for the info on musket loading. Doc,

Why is it necessary to swab the bore with a cannon but not a musket?

Interesting in the hundreds of thousands of rounds shot with a patched round ball at Fort Shoots and Silhouette competitions. Basically shooting as fast as we can shoot accurately. Have never even heard of a so called “cook-off”. Thinking perhaps this happens because of a piece of paper left...

    Barrel length question

Cutting the end of the barrel and making it square with a hand held tool ? Not a good way to go. Can it be done of course it can, but definitely not the best way to finish the end of any barrel. Turn it square on a lathe and then finish with an eleven degree taper. ALL top of the line company’s...

Why is it necessary to swab the bore with a cannon but not a musket?

Perhaps on our cannon events we demand sponging the barrels because of the large amount of spectators watching. Actually in a cannon there’s no exposed powder until after the prick. And yet after a rifle or pistol shot we pour loose powder down the barrels without ever swabing in a far faster...

    Hard times for BP shooters

Here I sit in anti-gun Ca. and don’t understand all of this hullabaloo on the lack of BP. Around me are several BP clubs that order case lots of BP and caps. Then hold and sell to their members as needed. Currently there are several places to purchase as much BP as you want. Such as Travelers...

Need help with locating some patching material

Larry, why limit yourself. Store bought Bridgers Best a very constant thickness and a very tight weave. Is available in sizes from 32 to 75cal. In .010, .015, and .020. For myself I E-mail “The Gun Works” and have it delivered to my door in a few days. Just lazy I guess. Doc,

So I wonder now if I'll ever get it 'clean' :) Spot check of barrel, patches look rough

The problem with some protection type oils, they run. If you stand up your gun barrel down and find an amount of oil where it stood after a long time that means your protection oil is no longer protecting in spots. Change to a oil that doesn’t run. Doc,

So I wonder now if I'll ever get it 'clean' :) Spot check of barrel, patches look rough

Perhaps he’s like me, and shoots a lot of clays, pheasant and other critters with a shotgun. And yes I use a modern liquid lead remover in my 10 and 12ga. Damascus doubles. Doc,

So I wonder now if I'll ever get it 'clean' :) Spot check of barrel, patches look rough

Ryan, It appears you’re cleaning of your gun is OK. Apparently the problem remains with your finishing oil. The old saying of never using petroleum products was true back then. Nowadays there are a few new products that never create tar OR build up. Don’t run while in storage and yet are nicely...

can i grind fffg to make ffffg?

Will 2f and 3f work for a prime absolutely they will. If you live in a very humid area such as the South East that’s what you may need. Then there’s some of us that are competitive shooters, we’re always looking for the edge. 4f is a minimum. Many of us use a kitchen utensil, a marble mortar...

    Age Range of BP shooters

What worries me is not the age group on this Forum, but the age group of the Rhondy people in my area. In the 1990s the local Rhondys had a participation of 400-500 shooters. In the last 5 years we have lost 3 Rhondys and a large participation would now be 175 shooters. Locally there’s still 3...

    Lack of younger shooters?

In my earlyer post on Peewee Long Gongs I’ve had them start as early as 3 years old with a load of 10gr of BP, I announce no one goes above 40gr. and ear protection a must. All can use cross sticks. The target is a 12inch thin hanging plate so a charge of 10 will swing it. At awards they pick...

    Lack of younger shooters?

In far northern Ca. I hold a Peewee Long Gong at several Rhondys At Louderback Rhondy every few years we bring in the scouts for a flag retirement. My wife is getting together a few of the high school trap clubs to compete each year for a perpetual trap shooting trophy. If we want BP to continue...

    Squirrel Gun Questions

Squirrel trail walks are an interesting happening on all of the local Rhondys. On our normal trails of swinging steel you need a minimum of 45 swing them. In the last three years squirrel trails have been added for 40cal. and under they are lighter smaller targets at a shorter distance. Mostly...

I have a question for the Smoothbore crowd

Well said, personally I’ve taken a Mulley under 50 with my Tradegun. But it’s not the norm. In the open country the Mulley’s prefer it becomes quite difficult. Doc,

I have a question for the Smoothbore crowd

In far northern Ca. we have a very large amount of tradegun shooters. On the first shot of the trail walk you’re always shooting at the tie breaker which is usually about 18to 25 yards. You need to hit a one inch Circle. Normally at least half will hit it. Non of us know about NSSA or where it...
