Oh I see it. You said I was a sad snowflake. Is that it?

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

I am new to this but it seems that there is a groundswell of people who are appreciating the beautiful craftsmanship of these special firearms.

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

I am continuing to work on the pistol. It is more challenging than I thought so I have to go slow. It's the most delicate project I have undertaken. I didn't expect this. So many of you warned me about this! I wouldn't wish this on any one! I'm happy with results so far but I have a ways to go...

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

Conservation is what I am attempting to do. I have a set of Joseph Manton pistols that needs nothing. The John Manton (although the picture doesn't really show it) was in bad shape. I didn't pay a lot for it and decided to conserve it. I figured someone would be interested in the project and...

I don't recall PMing you. What did I say? It is not on my message board. There is one person that I have PM ed with and we have had a cordial exchange of ideas.

Conservation is an accurate term. I have finished the outside metal work. All in all I’m happy with the results. It is cool that I can now read the serial number on the trigger guard. I live in CA and there are high winds. So the electric company has turned off power to prevent fires. It will be...

You have no idea what you are talking about. You base your opinion on one picture. Shame on you.

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

There is truly a way to restore most anything. It is knowing when to stop. I believe I know that. I plan to stop the thread and PM those people who might field questions from me. Also I have outside sources to contact who are experts in the art of restorations of many kinds of old relics. All...

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

Sorry but someone might this point significant. Pre and postwar cars have a lot of wood in them. No they are not 200 years old but there are inlayed eschuceans in them that take great care to remove without ruining the surrounding wood. The work is slow and tedious. Often you have to walk away...

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

I have no expectations from anyone. I thought that someone might find it interesting to see how I hope to restore this pistol. Take a vote. If you don’t want me to write a pictorial about it I’ll stop. And for what it is worth the picture does not show the unwanted grim that was never intended...

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

Hi Dave. Great advice. I removed the lock and you are correct as to how it was fitted and comes apart. The varnish is a later addition. I am still pondering how to remove the excess varnish from the trigger guard. Whoever did the prior restoration work on this pistol did a poor job...

The screws you refer to took 4 weeks to massage them out without cracking the screws or defacing the beautiful engraving on the head.

Boy do I disagree with you. If 200 years ago someone threw the pistol in a pail of mud, let it sit there for 200 years I guess you would choose to leave the mud alone as the mud has lived on the pistol for 200 years and deserves to be there.

Luckily the barrel was browned when I got it. But I am planning to put racing stripes on it.
